“Senior pictures are stupid.” Here’s what I’d say back. 👇

Not a list of reasons he’s wrong. Just:

“Okay. Tell me why you think that.”

Then listen. “Stupid” usually stands for something else, like not wanting to pose, worrying what his friends think, or not wanting it to become a whole production.

You don’t have to win the argument. You just have to understand what it’s really about.

What reason did your son give you? I’m curious.

When the conversation starts with “We need to pick a photographer, clothes, a date…” it sounds like another list of chores to him.

Try this instead. Pick a low-pressure moment (car rides count) and ask one easy question:

“If we did senior pictures, is there anywhere you’d actually want to take them?”

You don’t have to plan everything at once. You just have to make it feel like his, too.

He’s not wrong. At least not yet.

From his side, senior pictures can look like Mom’s project. You’re the one bringing them up, planning the outfits, and thinking about what you want to remember.

So don’t just tell him why they matter to you. Ask him: “If we did these, what would you want them to show about you?”

His car. His sport. His style. His friends. Let them be about him, too.

If your son keeps saying he doesn’t want senior pictures, it’s usually not the whole story. Start by understanding him, not convincing him.

The Friday night lights belong to the band, too.

Football may get the spotlight, but the band helps give Friday nights their sound. For this senior, we brought his marimba, drum set, and tenor drums onto the field and built his portraits around a part of his life that matters to him.
