Recently, I had the priveldge of helping this lovely lady celebrate a milestone in her life. The 40th birthday photo shoot was her idea, and It was a pleasure to photograph. We should all celebrate life with as much joy and gusto as this young lady.

2018 was the year I officially opened my photography business. It was a fun year, filled with graduations, homecomings, and family photos.

I tried a few new things, too. I took photos at a black belt test, a band performance, and a play.

It was a fun year with lots of challenges and great memories.

Last weekend I was asked to photograph three young martial arts students as they tested for their first Black Belt. I was an honor for me to share their day.

The thing I noticed is how each of these students faced the challenge in their own unique way. They say when we are tested, our true colors are revealed. The students dug down deep into that part of them that defines their personality.

The youngest was Mr. Determination. He was not feeling well that morning, but he gritted his teeth and powered through the test. The look on his face was focused and serious. I know he will always conquer whatever challenge comes his way.

The second youngest was little Miss Energy. She had random burst of energy and silliness. She approached the test in much the way I imagine she approaches life, she enjoyed every second of it. She was a pleasure to watch.

The oldest, if you can call ten old, was Miss Confidence. She reached a point in the endurance testing where she realized that the belt was within reach and she started to smile. She never once quit smiling for the rest of the day. Earning a black belt is no easy task, and she was on top of the world.

Capturing special moments like this is why I love photography. It is as much fun for the photographer as it is for the families involved. Thanks so much for sharing your special day with me.
