Golden Hour Through the Canyon

As evening light settles into the canyon, the rails follow the Animas River toward the fading day. Storm clouds gather above the mountains while the last warm sunlight reaches the canyon walls, illuminating a route that has connected these rugged landscapes for generations. In the quiet moments before sunset, steel and river continue their journey side by side through the heart of Colorado’s high country.

Backyard Survivor

Caught this little desert toad blending perfectly into the sand right in my backyard. The rough texture, muted earth tones, and low light gave this shot a raw, almost prehistoric feel. I pushed the edit to keep the atmosphere natural and dramatic without losing the detail in the skin and eye reflection. Sometimes the best wildlife moments happen a few steps from your own door.

Kings of the Clearing

Two wild toms locked into a silent standoff, feathers lit by the morning sun and tails spread wide in full display. I wanted this shot to feel powerful and primal, almost like a duel frozen in time. The contrast between shadow and light really brought out the texture in the feathers and the intensity of the moment. Backyard wildlife can turn into a full documentary scene if you’re patient enough to watch.

“Echoes Above the Animas”

The afternoon silence of the canyon is broken by the sound of steel, steam, and history as the homebound train crosses the High Bridge north of Rockwood, Colorado. Fresh from Silverton and bound for Durango, the locomotive eases across the towering trestle above the rushing waters of the Animas River.

Moments before this photograph was made, the engine released steam from both sides of the bridge, leaving a lingering haze that drifted through the pines and canyon air. The fading plume, the winding train, and the dramatic mountain setting create a scene that feels suspended between past and present.

Captured at 5:15 PM on May 2, 2026 this image preserves a fleeting moment when the power of a steam locomotive, the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains, and a century of railroad heritage came together on one of Colorado’s most iconic stretches of rail.

The Presidential Awaits

Having already completed the turn at the Silverton wye, the Presidential Train sits quietly in town as passengers begin to board for the return journey to Durango. Beneath the towering San Juan Mountains, K-28 No. 473 stands ready, flags snapping in the mountain breeze while steam drifts from the locomotive. Moments later, this historic narrow-gauge train would begin its descent through the Animas Canyon, carrying another generation of passengers behind a living piece of Colorado railroad history. When the Valley Awoke

As morning fog surrendered its grip on the San Juan Mountains, sunlight spilled across the valley floor and set the Durango & Silverton’s Valentine’s Day Double Header ablaze in gold.

From the River Bend Ranch crossing, the scene felt almost impossible to belong to the modern world. Two steam locomotives worked at the head end, their exhaust rising together above the train while mountain shadows slowly retreated from the valley below.

For a fleeting moment, the light, the steam, and the mountains aligned. The romance of the narrow gauge wasn’t something remembered from history books—it was alive, thundering north toward Silverton beneath a clearing Colorado sky.

Valentine’s Day 2026 wasn’t simply a train ride.

It was a glimpse into another era.

The Winter Monarch

After 5:00 PM on January 31, 2026, No. 20 leads the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Photography Special through the frozen Animas Valley towards Durango. As the temperature dropped and evening shadows stretched across the snow-covered right-of-way, the veteran locomotive pressed onward beneath a towering plume of steam and smoke.

Moments like these remind us why steam railroading continues to captivate generations. The cold air sharpened every exhaust beat, every wisp of steam, and every detail of this 19th-century locomotive as she carried photographers through one of winter’s most dramatic displays.

More than a train photograph, this is a glimpse into an era that refuses to fade—a living piece of railroad
history charging into a Colorado winter evening.

“Through the Stone”

Durango & Silverton K-28 No. 473 winds carefully along the canyon walls south of Rockwood, its black iron silhouette cutting through sunlit granite as passengers ride deep into the San Juan Mountains. The contrast between steam, steel, and stone gives this narrow gauge moment a timeless feel.

Last Crossing Into Durango

RGS No. 20 rolls southbound across the final bridge over the Animas River in late January 2026, smoke drifting into the winter sky as the last train of the day heads home to the Durango station. The cold light, bare cottonwoods, and weathered steel bridge give this scene that timeless narrow gauge feeling the San Juan mountains are known for
