an ode to originality

short version: I’ve rebranded 🤙🏼

for those of you that like feelings- here’s the long version:
With my love for weddings being born through starting a business amidst a global pandemic it was natural that I gravitated towards intimate gatherings and elopements as a specialty and comfort spot. A few weeks ago I was listening to my favorite podcast interview Donna Carpenter and she said something that really resonated with me on how to explain why I’m shifting my business. “If you aren’t growing you’re dying”. Over the last couple of years I’ve had the honor of documenting nearly 100 weddings. Each one unique and with its own charm.

Earlier this year I sat down and thought about what really filled my cup, what made me happy, and what was sustainable for me long-term. This all started with me asking my peers and past clients what words came to mind when they thought of me and the work I loved. Eclectic, chaotic, eccentric, celebratory, and unexpected were some of my favorites. I went on to make a mood board filled with some of my favorite images I’ve ever created, and I realized it was very in line with the words most folks were describing me with. It was in that moment that I realized that I’ve not only grown as a person since I last figured out what this identity was, but my business has grown and shifted majorly as well.

It took a long time to figure out that I don’t have to be like every other wedding photographer. I decided to embrace that and highlight my quirks and differences. And… this was born. A new era that is an ode to originality. Imma be cheesy for a second, but not even the most intense tropical storm could put a damper on Grace and Peter’s spirits. I walked in to say hi to Grace the morning of her and Peter’s wedding and she lit up saying “OH MY GOD YOU’RE HERE ITS HAPPENING” and I don’t think she lost that energy for a second through the day. Sometimes I get folks who have such a magnetic energy that I don’t want their wedding to end. Grace and Peter are the most kind, loving, and welcoming people. It was an honor to celebrate them, and damn do they throw a good party ✨

Something small business owners are taught about marketing is creating a client profile, or an “ideal client”. The goal is to narrow in focus with branding, marketing, and overall experience to the couples I serve.

I dreamed big on this. I listed out all the things that really got me excited about photographing weddings: carefree yet high-energy couples, folks that love a soft romantic morning that slowly turns into an edgy and eccentric evening, intentionality in the details, trusting me to create while being nothing but background noise, and more.

Everyone I work with aligns with one or more parts of the “ideal client” I’ve created for myself, but every now and then, I get to work with couples who check every frickin’ box. That’s what happened with Emma and Daniel.

Through and through they trusted me and had the most beautiful vision of their wedding day. Slow and carefree throughout the morning, and turning it up for a party that lasted until the wee hours of the morning. From their vows that made me tear up, their shot list that comprised of “being themselves and frolicking through a field”, all the way to the pinata filled with goodies… I couldn’t have asked for a better fit. Cheers to E+D and their love forever and ever ✨

The most special photos I’ve ever had the privilege of taking. Growing together with one of my best friends and watching her find the love of her life is something so incredible, and to be able to document the start of their forever together means more than words can ever begin to describe. Love you both so much and I am stoked to celebrate such wonderful humans 🖤

When I say I take a documentary approach to weddings- this is what I mean. We were getting all set up for family portraits for Sophie and Joey -one of the few posed parts of the day. When I looked over to see where Joey was at, I saw him sharing this sweet moment with his grandmother as she looked at his new wedding band. Instead of hurrying everyone to get ready for the portraits, I simply let everything unfold as it was. It may not always be the most picturesque setting, but these moments are the ones worthy of being documented and ones that I truly love 🖤
