This isn’t something I ever wanted to do, but for my own sanity, I need to put it out there. Center Stage Sports will be scaling back its sports coverage. Some of you, undoubtedly have noticed this happening already. Varsity football will remain largely unaffected because it fits in nicely with my schedule. Lori and I will still photograph the games. I will still write a game story. But both might be posted later than we have done in the past.
In May of this year, after six years of working from home, I was called back to work in the office. For six years Lori and I spent most of our day together. We joked that we had nothing to talk about because we could see or listen in to what each other was doing every day. Now, we’re ships passing in the night. I leave for work while she’s still in bed. When I get home from work she’s gone to a senior photoshoot most of the time. When she gets home we have a little time together before I’m ready to call it a night while she works until midnight and it all starts over again.
When we started shooting sports other than football it was a reason for me to get out of the house I had been in all day and have some fun. Now when I come home, I kind of want to stay and enjoy it. The little things that I could do while working from home – wash some dishes, do a load of laundry, vacuum, dust, mow the lawn, now must wait until I get home.
Whereas I could once take an hour and a half of vacation time to photograph an occasional 3:30 p.m. match, it now requires more time and planning if I’m coming from work. A 6 p.m. game gives me a half hour to scrounge for some food and get to the game.
My work also reorganized in April, and a short time later my boss retired. Our staff of six is now down to three. I’ve taken on more work and more responsibility. Recently, I’ve done more weekend work, more out of town work and more evening work. I love my job and now it needs me more than ever.
I’m not saying we’re never going to photograph anything again other than varsity football. When I get the urge, I’ll pick up the camera and go to a game. But there may be times that I just want to go to a game to relax and watch and not worry about coming home and culling and editing photos for an hour or two.
There are a lot of talented photographers in the Mill Valley area. It would be great if every sport could connect with a photographer to cover their games. I encourage people to reach out to them and strike a deal. You won’t regret it and you will have visual memories to last a lifetime.
