More attempts at catching the motion of the kelp forest. This time in the shallow surge of Breakwater and a slight zoom with slow shutter to create the warping effect. This was one of my favorite entries from the Monterey Shootout in the wide angle unrestricted category.

This years Monterey Shootout has been another one for the books! A weekend full of inspiration, cold diving and so many great memories. I came down to Monterey with no expectations and no real plan other than be creative and have fun, and I feel like I was successful in that mission.

I focused this weekend on mostly creative, slow shutter/ motion blur macro and wide angle shots and it paid off! I was awarded First place with this photo of kelp in the Intermediate Macro Traditional category and walked away with a trip to Fiji! I also came away from the weekend with many new friends and feeling incredibly inspired by all of the amazing entries and talented artists

A huge thank you to my dive buddy and shootout partner Alex Glick for making the trek down from Oregon, for inspiring me to be a better photographer and pushing it to the very last minute for our entries as always. And a huge thank you to the entire crew Backscatter UW Video & Photo for hosting such an amazing event with insane prizes, Paradise Taveuni Resort Fiji for the incredible trip to Fiji , and the entire Monterey scuba and photography community for being so open and welcoming to a few outsiders! Here’s to next year! 🍻

I’m very honored to have been nominated and shortlisted in the reFocus Awards for my “Return of the King” photography series! Very happy to have been selected among the many amazing photographers who entered and won! For now it’s back to the creeks and streams to continue to document the migration and life cycle of these beautiful animals.

Excited to finally share this photo of a female Chinook salmon with a belly full of eggs, in the process of digging her Redd! Although it means it wasn’t awarded in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year, it did make it all the way to the Finals, which I’m pretty happy about! I can’t wait to see all of the photos that are awarded this year. I spent several weekends trying to capture a pair of salmon spawning on a Redd this past fall, which was a challenging task. This was as close as I got to one making a Redd. Still very happy with the shot overall and I will continue to practice my technique and approach getting close to these beautiful fish

Blown away by the colors on these Chinook! This season I saw so many color variations on these Salmon that I never knew were possible… the beauty in these creeks are unmatched
