Excited to finally share this photo of a female Chinook salmon with a belly full of eggs, in the process of digging her Redd! Although it means it wasn’t awarded in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year, it did make it all the way to the Finals, which I’m pretty happy about! I can’t wait to see all of the photos that are awarded this year. I spent several weekends trying to capture a pair of salmon spawning on a Redd this past fall, which was a challenging task. This was as close as I got to one making a Redd. Still very happy with the shot overall and I will continue to practice my technique and approach getting close to these beautiful fish

My first time diving at North Monastery didn’t disappoint! Had a chance to take a quick trip away from the frigid mountain weather and get down to Monterey and was greeted with some incredible conditions. Giant schools of Blue rockfish floating in healthy kelp forests teaming with life at every corner. Thanks to my dive buddy for making the quick trip with me

Gliding through crystal-clear waters in La Paz, completely surrounded by a living, breathing cloud of sardines. Millions of silver flashes moving in perfect unison, wrapping around me, shifting shape with every pulse of the ocean. Moments like this don’t feel real until you’re inside them—weightless, quiet, and utterly humbled by the scale and beauty of the sea. This is why we dive… such an incredible week of diving in La Paz with and this past October

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of escaping the frigid lakes and streams of Northern California to La Paz, Mexico. The conditions in the Sea of Cortez were incredible! 86 degree water, 100+ ft visibility, and this lazy Green Sea Turtle chilling hard on top of the Fang Ming wreck were just some of the highlights!
Many thanks to and for a great trip!

Even the living dead can’t catch a break… after weeks of fighting their way upstream to spawn, the female Chinook Salmon slowly start decaying while guarding over their eggs… that doesn’t stop eager males from trying to spread their seed! While sitting with this female at least three males swooped in to shoot their shot.

The fall Chinook run is thriving this year in Northern California! After seasons of struggle, our rivers and tributaries are alive again — salmon pushing upstream in record numbers, carrying the next generation of wild fish. A hopeful sign for the health of our ecosystems. I had the pleasure of spending some time with these beautiful fish over the past couple weeks.. here are some of my favorite shots so far
