Wauconda — water 🌊 spirit 🌬wonder✨ In the native language, it’s the word for God, or perhaps more specifically “spirit water.” There does seem to be something otherworldly about the town’s lake, emanating from natural glaciers, that has transcended all cultures that grace her shores. Justus Bangs, whose name she now bears, declared it the place where heaven meets earth. In that moment, he knew he’d found his home. I haven’t lived here since 2001, but every time I roll back into town I have the feeling of returning home. It’s an unassuming little place, but if you land in it just right it packs a punch — the earthy scent of brush smoke, fishermen walking home along a well-worn snowy trail of footprints across the lake in an early March dusk, the musical sound of trickling creek water after a thaw, the sound of music and laughter from the newly opened lakeside pubs, the rainbow layered sunsets — cobalt, mint, rose, lemon — flickering candle light from the memorial headstones in the cemetery with the indestructible prairie still rolling on behind it.
