This weekend, the girls competed in the Kids Adventure Games in Big Bear. I followed them around and took some pictures. It always amazes me what a camera can capture. Here are my strong, adventurous girls! They are not always smiling. They are scraped up, sweating, scared, frustrated, and more than anything, proud of what they can accomplish!

Tonight, I sat outside in Big Bear listening to the haunting calls of wolves at the zoo just down the street. It was a mournful cry calling out for others who do not exist. Others who were killed off in 1924 and just barely, in 2015, started venturing back into California several hundred miles north of here. There is a sadness I feel, one that is echoed in the wolf’s cry. A sadness in how we as humans treat our world. Most people just want to take, take, take. If we stay on this path, soon our world will have nothing left to give.

We always hike Tokopah Falls on August 16th or as close to it as we can. We hiked this trail as a family on the last Father’s Day Jeff was alive. I thought it would be a great place to remember happy thoughts and be in nature. We found this little pond just off the hike on the first anniversary of Jeff’s death. I had brought some roses and it was the perfect spot to spread the petals. Now we do it every year. Walking down the trail after “Jeffrey Memorial Pond”, I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get a sign. We were almost to the end of the trail when I looked up and saw a magnificent deer. Deer! Deer! I yelled. But on closer inspection, there were 4 deer. They were so close, you could almost touch them. You could see the velvet still on their antlers. When other hikers showed up, the deer made a run for it down the trail right next to Skylar as she sat on a rock. We followed them down the trail and three had crossed the river to safety. One stayed on our side of the trail. He looked at us with dark brown, almond eyes. He was not afraid even though we were a mere few feet away. As Skylar walked down the trail, he followed her. Ever watching us and looking directly into our eyes. Then I paused, told him it was ok, and he crossed the trail in front of me and joined the others across the river.
