Turkey Vulture - Nare Do Well - Discovery Bay, Washington - Turkey Vulture nares are one of their coolest adaptations. The nares are their nostrils, and on a Turkey Vulture they’re unusually large and perforate—there’s no complete nasal septum separating the two openings. If you look at the bird from the side, you can often see right through the nostril to the other side of the bill.
That anatomy goes along with something Turkey Vultures are famous for: an exceptionally well-developed sense of smell. Unlike many birds, they rely heavily on olfaction to locate carrion. They can detect odor compounds produced during decomposition—particularly sulfur-containing compounds such as ethyl mercaptan—and use those odors to help locate carcasses, even when vegetation makes them difficult to see.
The open-looking nares also have a practical benefit for an animal that routinely puts its head into carcasses. Their bare head and relatively open nasal anatomy are easier to keep clean than a feather-covered face would be. The nasal passages still contain internal structures and tissue, though, so it isn’t literally just an empty tunnel through the head.

Get a Sneak Peek of the Fifth Annual Strait from the Artists Studio Tour November 14 and 15, 2026 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM! The Sequim Museum & Arts at 544 N Sequim Avenue features the during the Fifth Annual Strait from the Artists Studio Tour Preview Exhibition for the month of October and the tour is November 14 and 15 where the artists create.

This exhibit is a visual introduction of the artists you can visit from A to Z, the artists include Christine Alexandre-Zeoli, Ross Brown, Lauren Blair Churchill, Trish Cole, Drew Ealey, Monica Gutierrez-Quarto, Michelle Lindblom, Sharman Owings, Pat Reichner, Laurie Riley, Keith Ross, Linda Silvas, David Willis, and Len Zeoli.

Pretty exciting news from the other side of Washington!

I’m honored to share that one of my photographs was selected as the cover image for The Inlander’s Annual Manual — and to make it even more special, Kryzyna's photograph from the same location was featured on the Table of Contents page! Keith's Frame of Mind is fully represented here!

My cover image captures a paraglider soaring above the Palouse in Eastern Washington, one of those incredible landscapes that seems to change every time the light moves across those rolling hills.

For those who aren’t familiar with it, The Inlander is based in Spokane and serves the Inland Northwest. Each year they publish their Annual Manual, a special guide celebrating the people, places, food, arts, recreation and experiences that make this part of the Pacific Northwest unique. Unlike a regular weekly issue, the Annual Manual is designed to be enjoyed and picked up throughout the year.

Having one of my images chosen for the cover is a wonderful honor. Having Christina’s photography included in the same publication makes this one particularly special for both of us.

It’s always rewarding to see a photograph take on a life beyond the moment when the shutter was pressed — and to see our work helping showcase the beauty of Washington State. It was out first time photographing this area, so we are pretty thrilled with the results. Got this publication, and my other Sunset pic was used on KOMO 4 News the night I posted it. Good trip!

A big thank you to The Inlander for featuring our photography and for giving us the opportunity to share a little of the beauty we were fortunate enough to witness that day.
