Like so many others in the horse world, my heart broke when I read about what happened in Las Vegas.
As a photographer who has photographed thousands of riders over the years, I have had the privilege of standing behind my camera and witnessing the incredible bond between riders and their horses. I’ve seen the countless hours, the sacrifices, the victories, the tears, and most importantly, the love. These horses are so much more than athletes…they are partners, family members, and best friends.
When I look at my own horse, I cannot imagine the heartbreak I would feel if someone intentionally caused her harm. The thought alone makes me physically sick. I know many of the owners affected by this tragedy are experiencing emotions that no horse owner should ever have to endure.
The horse community is one of the most tight-knit communities I’ve ever known. We celebrate together, we grieve together, and when one of us hurts, we all hurt. What happened wasn’t just an attack on a few horses. I feel like it shook an entire community that is built on trust, respect, and a deep love for these animals.
Today, I’m asking everyone to keep the victims, their families, and their horses in your prayers. Pray for healing, for comfort, and for strength in the days ahead.
Hold your horses a little tighter tonight. They give us their whole hearts every day, and they deserve nothing less from us.
