A little beauty from my day. 🌼

I just photographed this beautiful bouquet, and I’m planning to use these photographs as reference for an upcoming still life painting.

I love these little moments—pausing to notice the colors, the light, the delicate details, and the beauty that is right in front of us.

For me, this is one of the joys of being an artist: seeing beauty, savoring it, and then creating something from it.

There is so much beauty in our everyday lives if we take the time to notice it. A bouquet of flowers. A beautiful afternoon. Light falling across a room. The people we love.

It's National Dog Day and I still remember this sweet pooch who captured my attention years ago at the Maple Syrup Festival. I had to photograph this adorable dog! Look at that face -- perfect for my next pet pastel portrait.

Welcome! If you’re new here, I’m Annie Dash. ❤

I’ve been married to my beloved husband, Andrew, for 19 years, and together we have five precious boys.

I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. I started drawing and painting as a little girl, and I was blessed with parents who encouraged my artistic dreams from the very beginning.

In middle school, I had the opportunity to study with an amazing private art teacher who introduced me to classical art skills at a young age. During high school, I was fortunate to receive scholarships to study at a prestigious art school during the summers, where I continued to grow as an artist.

The fourth and fifth photos are from my senior art display at the end of high school—a little glimpse of where this journey began.

I went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Visual Arts, studying drawing, painting, photography, art history, printmaking, and much more. The painting you see here was created during college, from a photograph Andrew—my future husband—took. ❤️

But art, for me, has never been just about making beautiful things.

I believe art is a way of paying attention.

It is a way of noticing the beauty, wonder, and goodness that surround us every day.

My faith is at the heart of my creative life. I believe God is the true Master Artist, and when I create, I hope to honor His creation and reflect a little of the beauty He has given us.

And visual art isn't my only creative language. I'm also a classically trained mezzo-soprano—I studied voice for 22 years and now sing as a cantor at church. I've spent many years acting, and I love to write, too.

Creativity has woven its way through nearly every part of my life.

And these days, I want my art to be an invitation:

Slow down.
Notice the beautiful things.
Savor this life.
Be grateful for the ordinary moments.
Make something.
And don't be afraid to begin.

There is so much beauty in this world, and I believe it is ours to enjoy.

From blank paper to Fritz. 🐾

Come along to see a few steps from my process for creating this piece. From painting in the first layers of Pan Pastel, to adding highlights with pastel sticks, and finishing layers of detail with pastel pencils, every layer adds to the piece.

One of the best things about art is that we don't have to have perfect skills before we begin-- it's the process of learning, doing, and making that makes the journey beautiful.

This is Fritz. 🐾❤️

My first-ever cat portrait!

Fritz is a beloved member of our family, so he seemed like the perfect subject for my first adventure into pastel pet portraiture. I loved the challenge of capturing his beautiful tabby markings, those bright green eyes, and all that wonderfully fluffy fur.

I'm also using this painting as the foundation for an art lesson I'm creating for my son. One of the things I love most about making art is that there is always something new to learn—and there is so much we can discover when we slow down and really look at the world around us.

This little painting has been a fun reminder that we don't have to wait until we're experts to try something new. We can learn by doing, make mistakes, keep practicing, and enjoy the process along the way.

And in the end, we get to make something beautiful of the things we love. 🐱🎨

Meet Fritz. 🐾🤍

This is my first-ever cat portrait—and I painted it for a very special reason.

I'm using this painting to create an art lesson for my son, so we can learn together about observing, drawing, color, value, texture, and the process of turning what we see into a work of art.

And, of course, what better subject than Fritz? 😻

One of the things I love most about art is that there is always something new to learn. Even after years of creating portraits, I can approach a new subject and be a beginner again.

That's a good reminder for all of us: we don't have to know everything before we begin. We just have to be willing to try, learn, and keep going.

I'm excited to share this process with my son—and with you!

From photograph to pastel portrait… ❤️

This portrait is especially meaningful to me because the little girl in it is me!

The original photograph was taken when I was a baby, and while I love working from high-quality photographs whenever possible, a photograph doesn’t have to be perfect to become the starting point for a beautiful portrait.

Old family photographs, snapshots with imperfect lighting, faded prints, or images that aren't quite “portrait quality” can still hold something incredibly valuable—the expression, personality, and memory of someone you love.

For my own portrait, I chose to take a softer, more artistic approach. I used a light, gentle background to emphasize the sweetness and innocence of babyhood and to echo the soft, delicate quality of the pastel medium.

Rather than simply reproducing the original photograph, I wanted to capture the feeling of the moment.

That is one of my favorite things about creating a fine art portrait: the reference photo is the beginning, but the artwork becomes something uniquely its own.

So if you have an old photograph you've always loved—even if it's not technically perfect—don't count it out. It may contain the very memory that deserves to become a treasured work of art.

Your favorite memories don't have to be perfect to be worth preserving. ❤️

I painted the portrait on the left when I was a middle school student in 1994, eager and excited to create a pastel portrait for the first time.

The pastel portrait on the right is my current interpretation of that same image, created more than thirty years later.

Looking at these side by side reminds me that growth takes time.

No one starts as an expert.
No one begins with perfect skills.
We all begin somewhere.

What matters is not how polished the first attempt is, but whether we continue.

Every drawing, every lesson, every mistake, every hour spent practicing becomes part of the journey.

Honor your beginnings.
Celebrate your progress.
And keep going.

You never know what can happen over the course of a lifetime of learning. ❤️
