used to think that being a photographer meant I can only take photos. Earlier in my career I remember being very young and having people question my commitment to my craft regularly. I would get questions like “is this your full-time job?” I guess that led me to believe that I had to act like Photography was the only thing that inspired and consumed my days. The truth is there are some different layers to who I am as a person and an artist. And it’s not fair to myself to continue thinking that I have to show up the way I think I have to. Because I’m not 19 anymore trying to convince everyone I’m a real artist.
I found ceramics two years ago when I tried to sign my kids up for a clay class. They refused to geo, so I decided to do it myself. And something happened. Something about the meditative state of working with Clay opened up so many things for me. Because don’t all artists struggle with imposter syndrome? Aren’t we all just people in the world trying to express ourselves?
I began drawing and painting women. Then painting them on my mugs. Then I was inspired to do a creative shoot with a bride. Here is the result.
