Green turtles are the largest of all the hard-shelled sea turtles, but have a comparatively small head. A typical adult is 3 to 4 feet long and weighs 300 to 350 pounds and they have dark brown, grey, or olive colored shells and a much lighter, yellow-to-white underside.

This morning finding the sea turtles was rather quick. While waiting for the one spotted nesting in the dark we saw another one not 50 feet away going back to sea. Not a great photo as it was still dark at 05:55 am and we don't use lights or flash. ISO 25,600, 1/10 sec shutter, F/2.8, 300 mm

Another successful turtle hunt in the books. While we didn't get them coming out of their "nest" we got them returning to the sea. We actually saw one on the "nest" but it was still pretty dark so I couldn't tell if it was coming out or not. We decided to walk a little and then come back to catch her coming out and heading back to sea. Unfortunately by the time we turned around she was making her way to the sea. So we hustled back and captured half of her crawl back to the sea. Tally this morning two moms heading back to the sea and two freshly hatched heading to the sea.

Starting off the 4th of July weekend with another Sea Turtle Expedition. While initially it didn't look promising as we only saw about 7 crawls in a little over a mile walk. Last time I walked it there were probably a good 50 crawls in the mile. But another quick look down the beach and we were able to see a small group that looked as if they were just standing around, That is a clue that something has or will be happening soon. So we continue on and meet up with the group.Wee quickly saw the female loggerhead completing her nest building up by the dune. Enjoy these photos as she makes her way back to the sea. Shot from a distance utilizing a 300mm prime lens, some photos are cropped in post processing and some are cropped in camera.

If you see a small hatchling in June like this one, you are likely seeing hatchlings from earlier nests laid in the spring. While the peak hatching season in Melbourne is later in the summer, incubation takes about 45 to 75 days. Early-arriving turtles (like Leatherbacks and early Loggerheads) can result in babies emerging by late June. Photographed in Brevard County, June 28, 2026.
