Ever wonder how to capture a beautiful series of candid photos of your clients? You know the frolicking in a field, looking away, Pinterest vibes? I use my own method that I dubbed the “zig zag” based on how I direct my client to walk towards me in a zig zag - watch and see what I mean!

PS - while I originally intended to start a whole brand new page for photography education and mentoring - the last 4 weeks have helped bring clarity on what content I want to create and how everything ties together. For now, I’ll be bringing a mix of education and real client work ( and other fun stuff ) all under this page. Hope you enjoy ( and come to learn about my silly sense of humor )

When you are getting started , you don’t magically go from having an empty calendar to being fully booked overnight. When you find yourself in the in-between - it’s important to start creating a schedule AS THOUGH you have already arrived. Normalize what feeling booked up FEELS like. Create a schedule that fits your lifestyle and income goals. Start filing your days with creative projects. If you want to get to where you’re going, you want to start living in alignment with what that future version of yourself looks and feels like.

By doing this you are creating an energetic shift, and signaling to the universe - through action - that hey! this is what I’m doing. Before you know it you’ll wake up one day and your weeks will be filled and it will start to feel like you’re making progress in the right direction. But you have to take action.

If you want your senior photos to look like this - it’s not doing what you would expect. I actually prefer to do my sessions during the brightest part of the day - this session in particular was a morning session in May, with the sun shining. I look for pockets of “open shade” with tall buildings or trees between the sun and my subject. I also look for areas where there is bright ground ( ie concrete ) to act like a natural reflector for fill. This has been my signature style for decades - as I’m not a huge fan of golden hour, and the way it creates muddy tones in the dark areas of photos, or too much orange overall.

Is there space for you to enter a saturated Senior Portrait market? According to a quick Google search, and running some easy math - I think so.

Even if you were booked and busy there’s no way you could serve all the potential clients. I ran these numbers based on my area ( greater Seattle ) - but I encourage you to do some of your own market research to see what’s possible wherever you’re located!
