Round and round we go. New seasons approach and before we know it a year has passed. Clients return for more photos to document their time together. And I lead them through with subtle prompts. It’s always optional to actually do the prompt, but in most cases clients buy into it. Oh the temporary power of a photographer, haha! And so we often get the happy jump shot at the end. Always entertaining. For everyone. 🤣

If you can still pick up your kids, do it! Recreating some images from prior years when the kids were half their size is usually entertaining. And I’ll always agree to photograph the moment, haha. Definitely going to bring out some fantastic and genuine expressions! We really do have a wonderful time at photo sessions. Even if you weren’t expecting it. 🤣

Next month marks my 12th year as “The Hidden Lens Photography”. It’s funny how time goes by and life takes you in a direction you couldn’t have imagined or predicted. Prior to my photography endeavor, I worked 11 years in investments, managing money for high net worth individuals. I loved those years and find huge value in understanding the importance of knowing how to make smart choices with money. I still think there’s a gap in financial literacy with what teens are required to know upon leaving high school. So parents, fill the gap if you can. And fill those frames with fresh photos (always)!

Do your kids change their “vibe” occasionally? Experimenting with social focus, mood, and confidence? Yah, mine too! I love to look back at old photos and see the ride we’ve been on, seeing the variations over the years…. Always entertaining!

That being said, have I seen you recently? One way to pull out the vibe in full force is to schedule a photo session for your family or kid(s). They will have an opportunity to let their current vibe shine! I even have mini sessions available this spring for this. Oh, and high school seniors should get on my calendar now if you want a session before graduation.

My kids would often start a conversation with, “Do you remember….”. They still do it now, but the flashbacks I have are mostly back in the days when we would walk together to elementary school. I couldn’t help but continue their phrase with the lyrics from the Earth, Wind & Fire song, “September”…. I’m sure you know it…

Do you remember
The 21st night of September?
Love was changin’ the minds of pretenders
While chasin’ the clouds away

They would always be flustered when I would break into song with my terrible voice, nagging me to stop. I’d only get to the word “September” and then we’d all giggle and refocus to the topic that one of them was trying to bring up.

Ahhh… the little things in life that bring a smile and a memory. Something as simple as the first three words of a sentence.

Meanwhile, my other half is known to finish the kids’ questions of “Do you know….”, promptly with …”the Muffin Man?”

To each their own! 😂

Spring Minis are here! Annnndd …. Did you know that Daylight Savings is on Sunday, March 8th??!!! That’s only 12 days away. Wahoo!! We’re basically done with ‘Big Dark’ and moving towards a bunch more daylight in the evenings…

Sports were a big part of my youth and defined me in many ways. People who know me well or who attended school with me would likely agree. I’m an intense athlete and competitor. And I love what participation in sports can teach someone. My competition days are over but gosh I still love watching all of today’s athletes do their thing.

Needless to say I’m stoked that the Seattle Seahawks are playing in the Super Bowl tomorrow! I can remember as a kid watching the ‘86 Bears in the Super Bowl. Such a hoot with the Super Bowl Shuffle and all. C’mon Seahawks…. Let’s create some awesome memories and get this win!

“Can I bring the dog?”…. Clients often ask this question. I love including pets in sessions - after all they are a big part of your family! For outdoor sessions the answer is nearly always YES (unless some venue doesn’t allow them). What usually works best is including them for part of the session, but perhaps not all of it. With animals comes an additional degree of chaos, let’s be honest. Yes, we will try to get one “with everyone, including the dog, looking at the camera”, but do remember that this is an animal - so mange your expectations accordingly. Honestly it’s all the candid images of your family being their true selves, even if it gets a little rowdy, that are what really matter. You will appreciate these images as reminders of this time of life. I promise. So yes, bring the dog!!

“Give attention and focus to the toddler/preschooler”… that’s what I tell myself before a newborn session when there’s young siblings. It’s asking a lot to be still and hold attention for a photo when you are 2 or 3 years old! The fun factor always wins. Keeping the session lively and playful makes it so fun for the siblings. And stress free for the parent(s)! The newborn tends to be the easy one! I bet you never thought you’d hear that! But at this point, parents are pros at the newborn thing… it’s that first child that has you still winging it! 🤣
