High school senior portrait sessions are at their best when they capture both who a student is right now and where they are headed next.

For Lexi, a high school senior and dedicated soccer player heading off to play at the college level next year, we wanted a session that balanced classic portraiture with subtle nods to her athletic passion.

We started the afternoon at the Bellevue Botanical Gardens, using the greenery for family portraits and shots of Lexi with her siblings before moving into individual portraits. Being comfortable in front of the camera doesn't always come naturally, but as the session went on, Lexi really opened up and let her personality shine through.

To finish the shoot, we relocated to Medina Beach Park to catch the sunset over Lake Washington. Lexi brought along a soccer ball to feature alongside her dress—capturing her moving with the ball by the water created a set of fun images that mark this milestone moment before she takes the field in college.

Congratulations to Lexi on her upcoming senior year and her college soccer debut!

Seattle is packed with incredible places for photos, but Discovery Park in Magnolia is in a league of its own when it comes to variety. Where else in the city can you get forest trails, tall-grass fields, dramatic bluffs overlooking Puget Sound, and a natural driftwood beach all within walking distance?

For Bella's senior portraits, having all those landscapes in one spot meant we could capture a huge range of looks without spending half the afternoon driving across town. We started in the quiet canopy of the trees and ended right by the water near the West Point Lighthouse.

Stepping into The Ruins for this 1920s flapper-themed holiday party felt like stepping back in time to a Roaring Twenties speakeasy! 🎷✨

From aerialists performing overhead to live dancers and tarot card readings in the cozy corners of the venue, the entertainment by Maison de V kept the energy high all night long. Events like this are a blast to photograph because there’s a new story unfolding in every corner of the room.

Ren and Eric chose the Seattle Municipal Court for their wedding day, a location that offers a clean, modern aesthetic alongside wide-angle views of the downtown skyline.

We started the session exploring the architecture of City Hall across the street, finding a red wall as a backdrop for sharp, high-contrast shadow work and clean silhouette portraits before heading upstairs.

The rooftop deck served as both the setting for their portrait session and the ceremony itself. Elevated above the city streets, the outdoor space provided a clear view of the surrounding urban landscape while keeping the focus on Ren and Eric as they exchanged vows.

When City University of Seattle needed updated visual assets for their South Lake Union campus, the objective was clear: capture the genuine energy of their community in a way that felt authentic to their everyday environment.

The shoot covered a wide mix of environmental portraits and collaborative moments between students and faculty. Working throughout the campus building allowed us to leverage natural light across common areas, study spaces, and shared work environments. These situational images highlight the active work culture and day-to-day engagement that marketing agencies and higher education admissions teams look for when building campaign libraries.

For the Computer Science program, we took a different approach to match the setting. Working around the server room and technical spaces, I integrated off-camera flash with dynamic color gels. This added a distinct visual edge to the photographs while keeping the focus squarely on the students and staff collaborating in their element.

The resulting image library gives CityU a flexible set of marketing portraits and situational photos for use across their website, promotional materials, and program guides.

Building and expanding major infrastructure requires raw physical labor, precision, and relentless consistency. When photographing the expansion of the SR 520 bridge connecting Seattle and Bellevue, I spent time on site watching local ironworkers prepare the structural foundation long before any concrete was poured.

The focus of this project was capturing the crews responsible for placing and tying the rebar. Rebar forms the backbone of a bridge deck. Every piece of steel must be placed according to precise engineering specifications, bound together by hand, and secured to handle the stress of daily traffic across Lake Washington.

Working the Grid

Standing on the deck framework, the scope of the manual work is apparent. Ironworkers spend hours bent over endless grids of heavy steel, pulling tie wire tight with pliers to lock every intersection into place. It is repetitive, grueling, and physically demanding work carried out in all weather conditions.

Precision under stress: Each rebar tie holds the structural cage in alignment so it won't shift when thousands of pounds of wet concrete are pumped over it.

Team rhythm: Crews work in coordinated lines, moving steady and methodical across massive sections of open deck.

Environment: Working out over the water adds another layer of exposure to the weather, wind, and height.

Documenting the Process

My goal with these images was to record the honest reality of industrial construction. Rather than overly staged portraits, the photographs focus on the actual mechanics of the job: the strain on hands, the worn gear, the scale of the steel structure, and the steady focus required to build something designed to last for decades.

Infrastructure projects often get judged by their final appearance or traffic flow, but the real integrity of the bridge is set long before the road opens. These photos capture the trade union members who built that foundation, one tie at a time.

First stop on a whirlwind Oregon shoot last week: Portland!

I was creating marketing portraits for an architecture firm and wanted to bring a little structural drama to the background. There’s nothing better than transforming a regular office environment using light.

Behind the scenes on this look: One softbox to camera left, and a second shaped light creating that diagonal across the green wall.
