A little reminder that sometimes family sessions may look different than what we expect. But honestly? The different can end up being so much more and so much better than what our “ideal” family session could have been. After having my own, my empathy for children has abundantly grown. Leaning into their needs has become the center of how my family sessions go. Children pay attention, and they certainly remember. I will never force young children to participate in certain poses that don’t feel good to them. We improvise, especially with very young ones, and create an experience for them. Family sessions should be enjoyable for all. We play, we run, we explore and observe through their eyes. We get down to their level and lean into what feels safe. It makes sessions so much more intimate, more enjoyable and at the end of the day - much more special. Little Mercer did not want to be held but he sure wanted to check out the flowers, find sticks and run through Discovery Park’s luscious grass. And this is a perfect example of what MY ideal family session looks like. It embodied everything this little boy loves. My heart swells looking at these, and his parents will have such sweet photos to look back on when he grows older and he stops wanting to look for sticks, pick flowers or run through the rain without a care in the world. ❤️
