New work for : The pandemic pummeled long-term care – it may not recover quickly, experts warn. At the western edge of the country, in a long-term care facility in Bellingham, Wash., there have been times in recent weeks when nurse's aide Sherylon Hughes was the only frontline staffer who showed up to work when two or three were needed.

"There would be a lot of scrambling to try and get somebody to stay from the previous shifts to get someone else to come in," says Hughes. "I got to work with a lot of my managers that weren't expecting to work and stay up all night, but that's what we had to do."

She'd never seen her facility hire so many temporary workers.

"It's definitely like a last resort for a facility that is desperate," she says. "By the time they figure out how we do things and they get comfortable and get to know our residents, the contract is over and they leave. So it's sort of a continuous influx of people who are just learning the ropes."

New work for on critical race theory, the narrative winning local elections for conservatives. Darwin Peters ran for school board director in the Clover Park School District near Tacoma in 2021. From the start, he was met with resistance from his opponents, who transformed a nonpartisan election into a political horserace by invoking partisan rhetoric like opposition to critical race theory. New work for  on how the Great Resignation has workers taking risks. More than 60% of Americans say using a job offer from another company for the sole purpose of receiving a salary increase is an ethical practice. Trevor Hay leveraged outside offers at his job in a segment of the nuclear industry twice. Now he's making nearly 100,000 more than he was just three months ago.

For , Microsoft’s $68 Billion Problem: 29 Activision Blizzard insiders detail a history of a problematic culture for women where hotness rankings, groping and day drinking flourished.

I met up with Cher Scarlett, an engineer at Blizzard between August 2015 and August 2016. After she posted about her experiences at Blizzard on Twitter, including negative encounters with HR, she heard similar stories from more than 300 employees and alums. Multiple women told Fortune that they didn't feel they could trust the HR process and that speaking out might in fact be used against them. Read Courtney Rubin’s feature for more, up now.

New work for on how the Great Resignation has workers taking risks. Nora Serino quit her management job at Bed Bath & Beyond, a company she spent four years at, when she was offered a position at XpressTest, a company that conducts Covid-19 tests at airports. She received an offer letter, employee handbook and start date of January 10, 2022. She resigned from her job at Bed Bath & Beyond in December, then after some radio silence, heard from a recruiter that the position was closed. "They ghosted me,” she says. For Paula Span’s New Old Age column in , I drove down to Olympia to meet with Helen Thornton.

Helen and her partner Margery Brown were together 27 years and bought a house together, raised a son together, had joint bank accounts and wills. When Margery died of cancer at the age of 50, same s*x marriage wasn’t legal in Washington. Social security denied survivor benefits years later, because the law requires a legal marriage.

In 2020, (with Helen as the lead plaintiff) won a class action lawsuit against the social security administration regarding surviving spouse benefits for same s*x partners while marriage remained illegal at the time of death. Now people like Helen are eligible for both higher monthly benefits and retroactive benefits for years denied. Read more online and in today’s paper.
