My workshop at the Seattle Asian Art Museum (description below) will be on Saturday, January 31st from 12:00-1:30pm. The workshop is free and you can RSVP at the link in bio. Hope to see you there!

Beyond Marginalization: Finding Authenticity in Our Shadow Selves

Complementing Anila Quayyum Agha’s exhibit Geometry of Light, this workshop offers a reflective, hands-on experience focused on the interplay of light, shadow, and belonging. Through a simple, guided art-making activity, participants will explore the masks we wear and the parts of our identities we hide in order to fit in within America. By illuminating these parts of ourselves, this workshop aims to create a supportive space for deeper self-understanding and a strengthened sense of belonging.

I feel so grateful for for being a third space for our AA community. It's a space that brings me joy. This was last Sunday's where we discussed Here After, a book on grief.

Rather than participating I was testing out a Fujifilm XT-5. I still shoot a Canon 5D Mark III for my art projects but miss everyday casual shooting so am considering a smaller system I can carry around. It was comedic how complicated this camera was and I accidentally deleted a bunch of photos by accident (sorry for the missing you and dog pic).

I had so much fun last night at the intuitive collage workshop with at .

It's so fun to unexpectedly see where we're at by just picking words and images and putting them together.

What do you think mine means? I do love the "color washing" phrase I found. Any guesses?

Applications for the 2025 Collective Power Fund are now open until November 16th! I won this grant several years ago so reach out to me if you'd like to chat with me about it. I encourage all of you to apply. This was the very first one I applied to so don't let lack of experience hinder you.

Collective Power Fund focuses primarily on supporting work that incites public dialogue, pushes boundaries, explores genre fluidity, speaks its truth through an authentic perspective, and is often non-traditional, anti-institutional, socially responsible, or disruptive of existing structures and conventions. It encourages a community-forward environment of resource-sharing, mutual support, and fellowship in the Pacific Northwest arts ecosystem.

The 2025 grant will distribute $60,000 in increments of $2,000 – $5,000 – $10,000. Individual artists, who live in unincorporated or incorporated King County, will be eligible to self-select for the $2,000 or $5,000 tiers and the $10,000 tier will be exclusive to artist teams or artist-run collectives within the county.

My work is part of the ACES Gallery! This pop-up exhibit is a showcase of visual work by BIPOC artists exploring themes of cultural storytelling and community connection. The exhibit offers a platform for both emerging and established artists to share their vision in a public space and spark conversation.

Four found poetry pieces from my series "Letters to My Father" will be featured. Mounted in two memory boxes, the found poetry was created from a Korean-English bible gifted to me by my father when I was young. Come see it!

Opening Friday, October 17th at 5-8pm.

I want to give a shoutout and thanks to my friend . It was her work with blackout bible poetry that gave me the courage to tear out the pages of the bible my dad gifted me so many years ago. It felt scary at first and my heart raced just thinking about it but now it feels liberating.

Megan is a trauma-informed writing coach and she recently published her book, Brave the Page. It's all about how writing your own story can facilitate healing. She writes,

"This is why I say over and over again that words are witnesses to our lives. They reveal us and, as a result, heal us by allowing us to be known by others and even by ourselves. With every story we uncover, write, and listen to, we are on a passage to spiritual awakening, and no enlightenment has ever come about without some trial or transformation."

In 2017, I did just this and it changed my life. I started putting words to a page to share in a newsletter all the stories I carried within. I didn't know why but felt a compelling need. With each story, I was able to unburden the pain and shame I had carried my whole life. This revealed to me that the stories I had been telling myself weren't true- that the pain and shame belonged to others and wasn't mine to suffer through any longer. It helped me figure out who I really was and changed me in a fundamental way. This courage to write is what has given me the courage to live.

We all carry stories about ourselves in our heads. If you haven't tried writing about them, consider Megan's book to help guide you. She is an amazingly compassionate person and a wonderful person to work with and someone I trust. Who knows? Maybe it will change your life.

Housed in 2 shadow boxes with the detritus of excised words littering their bottoms, Letters to My Father is a series of 4 found poems, from the pages of a Korean-English bible he gifted me, mounted on childhood photographs. The bible represents the emotional burden I carry, symbolic of the strained relationship I have with my father, with religion, my cultural identity, and our language gap.

These "letters" are a way to communicate with my father vulnerably, feelings I have not been able to express, through the medium he values most. It is a one-sided conversation in English, with the Korean side left intact, tracing our relationship from birth to today. It represents the journey from celebrating the awe and joy of being my father's daughter when I was young to feelings of loss and yearning.

This project has helped loosen the power the bible, and subsequently my father, has had over me so that I can learn to find peace within myself.
