Sarah and Pete’s day at CCMI is proof that your wedding is full of little moments you simply can’t plan for. And those are the ones that end up mattering most.

This was one of them. It’s dinner time and they go through the buffet first. Nothing special, Sarah and Pete are just plating up food. And out of nowhere, their people start losing it. Standing, cheering, clapping, and fully hyping them up.

So Sarah and Pete lean in animatedly scooping up mashed potatoes like it’s a full performance.

I didn’t see it coming, but I was ready for it. These little micro stories are happening all over the place on every wedding day.

As a documentary photographer, these are the moments I live for. In 10 years when you’re flipping through your wedding album and you land on these ones, they’re the ones that are gonna make you laugh out loud and remember what it felt like to be there that day.

The Ruins will always be one of my favorite Seattle venues to photograph.

It’s both grand and intimate at the same time, full of lush details and old-world 1920s opulence that make a wedding there feel immersive and alive.

I just published a full guide that walks through the space room by room. Not just photos, but a real breakdown of how the venue functions and how a celebration can unfold inside it.

If you’re considering , this is the kind of post that helps you think through the flow and possibilities before you ever step inside.

The full room-by-room guide is live - link in bio 🤍

And a little love to who planned one of the weddings featured in the guide and brought the most magical Halloween masquerade concept to life in the space.

Sent their gallery on Valentine’s Day… and opened my inbox to this:

“Jess!!!! Happy Valentine’s Day!! Five years ago Jacob and I took a road trip to Powell’s Books - we weren’t even dating yet - and I remember standing in the mystery section wondering if we were going to kiss. Looking at these photos feels completely full circle. I’m verklempt at how perfectly you captured that feeling. It’s so clear we’re just as in love now as we were then. I honestly can’t remember ever being excited to see photos of myself… and now I cannot wait to share these!! You made us feel so comfortable and so special. This experience was absolutely incredible.”

I had to just sit there for a minute after reading this one. Messages like this hit me all up in my feels and remind why I love what I do so very much 🥹 Thank you .sara.ashour and Jacob for inviting me to witness your love and this special chapter of life. And thank you for letting us wander your shelves and recreate a little first-date magic.

Most photographers don’t love a ceremony that runs long. But they’re actually my favorite. More time just means more to notice …more light shifting through the stained glass, more quiet emotion, more unique angles, and more small moments that catch my eye. This ceremony was full of rituals that mattered deeply to the couple, and they told me beforehand how important it was that each part be documented. Being trusted to witness it that closely felt really special. This is where I feel most like myself as a photographer - just observing, letting things unfold, and knowing I’m never going to run out of something worth photographing.

I blinked and somehow it’s October.

Every year I tell myself I’ll shoot and share at the same time, but when I’m in it, really in it…I can’t seem to do both.

This season took everything out of me and gave me even more in return. Finally coming up for air, and ready to start sharing the incredible stories I got to be part of this year.

This day reminded me how meaningful and story-rich my images can be when couples keep things simple and focus on actually living their wedding day. We grabbed a few portraits before the party, then they just let go and went full party mode. And something magical happens when couples do that - my creative brain goes wild, seeing details and layers I can’t easily catch on tightly packed, back-to-back timelines.

Why is compassion controversial?
Why is equality—basic humanity—still something we have to defend?

It’s exhausting to see the same patterns repeat. The names and headlines change, but the root issues remain: it’s just fear, ignorance, and hate dressed up as policy.

But I also see people showing up big.
Refusing to stay silent.
Loving out loud.
Building a world that’s more inclusive, and way more beautiful.

Pride shouldn’t have to be a protest. It should be a celebration of joy, of authentic self expression, and love.

To everyone feeling heavy this year—tired, frustrated, or disheartened—I hope this month reminds you: you’re not alone. You are seen, supported, and loved exactly as you are.

Love wins. Compassion wins. Humanity wins-always.

If I’m not close enough to get sweat, confetti or tears on me…I’m too far.

When the ci**rs come out and everyone’s standing in a loose circle — drinks in hand, jackets off, stories flowing — I’m right there with you. In the smoke, in the laughter, weaving through the haze to catch the way your bride’s man leans in mid-sentence, the way your dad lights yours with steady hands. I’m right there in the moment with you.

And the funny thing is? The closer I get (and the more that I act like I just belong), the less people notice me. I blend in. I’m one of the crew. People stop performing for the camera. They just be.

Plot twist: This wasn’t golden hour.

Golden hour had already packed up and gone home—

but these two really wanted that magical golden hour look, I brought it back with a little off-camera flash. ✨ Swipe to the last photo to see how it REALLY looked.

Beautiful lighting isn’t luck. It’s something I bring with me, so you don’t have to worry about the weather, the time, or chasing a perfect sunset. You just show up and feel the moment. I’ll make sure it looks exactly how it felt.

Molly and Alex were out on the dock, soaking in that just-us moment after their first look — And then they turned around.

Up on the lawn, their families were huddled together — waving, cheering, totally bursting with love. It wasn’t staged. No one planned it. But it happened.

The couple in the foreground. The lake stretched between us. And their people — blurry but unmistakably theirs — beaming in the background. I could have stayed where I was to get a clean shot of the family waving from the shore. But instead I quickly jumped behind the couple and found a little opening between their shoulders.

Some photographers wait for a clean shot.
I look for the layers — what’s in front, what’s behind, what’s unfolding in the in-between.

Real stories don’t happen in isolation. They happen through things — behind shoulders, through windows, around corners. Layers give a photo its place. Its texture. Its heartbeat.

They don’t just show you what happened —They show you what it felt like to be there.
