This video was actually filmed on August 25, 2023, but it took me nearly a year to finally get around to editing it and sharing!
While living in Kirkland, WA, we picked some apples from a nearby apple tree thinking we were going to make a tasty pie. However, we were treated, instead, to (what we believe to be) a Lesser Appleworm who had made their home inside an apple.
Seemingly aware of its new vulnerability, our new friend frantically sealed up its exposed tunnel until it was too tired to work anymore. I had never seen this creature before and I was absolutely fascinated by the way it worked to defend itself.
I realize that most people would see this icky little thing as a pest, but I see the beautiful and impossibly complex nature of the universe in this tiny insect. I am thankful for the moment I was able to share with it.
