SOUND ON. This is Greg. 💙
One of the most extraordinary parts of creating KEEP IT BEAUTIFUL was building the story with Shock and with his own voice: his humor, his brilliance, his honesty, and the unmistakable way he told a story.
Greg and I began creating this book together in 2011. More than anything, I wanted readers to feel that they had spent time with him. Not only Shock G or Humpty Hump, but Greg: the artist, the mentor, the friend, and the wonderfully complicated person behind it all.
Today, on his birthday, the book we created together is officially out in the world.

Alan Chazaro understood what Greg and I were trying to make together: something funny, complicated, unruly, human, and unmistakably Greg.

One of the greatest gifts of working on the Shock book has been the people I’ve met along the way.
I didn’t really know back in the day, but recently we started talking more. He gave an interview for the book, and even over the phone, you could feel his warmth, light, raw humor, & realness. That DU energy.
I was really looking forward to knowing him more - expecting to spend time together in Oakland at Feed the hood and the book release.
Hearing the news yesterday caught me off guard. It hit me hard.
Cleetis was one of those people I always pictured when I thought about the Digital Underground family - just part of that circle, naturally. That spirit Shock had of bringing people in, making it feel like family… Cleetis carried that.
After our interview, he told me, “Anything you need, you know we got you.” And he meant it.
It’s a reminder to not wait. Take the time now. Squeeze someone you love.
