Throwback Thursday: I took this photo a little over a year ago. Much like Ariel under the sea, I wanted to be where the people were.
It turns out that Mong Kok is the most population dense city district in the world. It's where the mostest people are.
If you've ever enjoyed the feeling of warm bodies pushed up against you swaying in unison at a concert and wanted it to be incorporated into your daily life, trying to be a pedestrian here might fill that gap. Walking through the three subway stops that compose it (Prince Edward, Mong Kok, and Yau Ma Tei) on a Wednesday afternoon took me an hour and a half. That's .6mi/hr, or one fifth normal walking speed.
You'd never notice how slow you were moving however. There's plenty of flashing lights, back alley street vendors, and peculiar people watching to keep you preoccupied.

While every city of at least eight million people is bound to have large apartment buildings, none can rival the density Hong Kong's housing practices. Half the population lives above the thirteenth floor, which is why it's named 'The World's Most Vertical City'. Craning my neck to see the entire population of my home town crammed into one building, with a dozen similar buildings on the same road, was a sensation I never ceased being fascinated with. This picture was taken from my dorm room window, making an estimated thirty thousand residents of this complex, my neighbors.

When I first arrived in Hong Kong, I was dazzled by how many cultures were quickly represented and how many lights there were keeping the whole show running. The entire city is connected by an amazingly efficient tram system, and the journey to the central harbor took less than thirty minutes. In a few moments I went up an escalator, crossed a street, then paused in shock as my eyes feasted on the skyline banquet of towers on a sunset backdrop. While the sight would become familiar over the next five months, the awe never wore off.
