Maple Pass Loop, October 6, 2018

Last year, there was no snow at this location. The colors are really lovely against the cold blue and white of North Cascades in autumn when snow falls at elevation (6,650ft up at the top; this was only a couple hundred feet below).

I was hoping for sunset clouds for a more interesting sky. I'll have to go back for that, but it's still a magnificent scene to see. Do yourself a favor and visit the Washington Pass Lookout off Hwy 20.

The Palouse is incredibly expansive, which you can tell by simply driving across it in any direction. To get a better measure, you can drive up to Steptoe Butte. View it during golden hour to see the best colors.

"A river system then migrated northward and transitioned into either a large lake or marsh. As this occurred, bentonite-rich clay (formed in part from volcanic ash erupted from nearby volcanoes) and clayey cross-bedded sand with some interbeds and lenses of lime ooze were laid down. "

Just for kicks, I wrote a casual black and white photo editing tutorial and used my Holiday Needle shot (posted just below) for the example image.

I prefer the color, but here's the B&W for monochrome fans.

The eastern sky was full of bright colors, but I preferred to move the hot spot off camera to catch the flow of interesting clouds, both warm and cold, with a touch of mountain.

Boots crunching diamond encrusted mud and white-frosted blades of grass, I went out into the freezing morning yesterday for a hike at Lord Hill Regional Park. Much of the autumn color is moving on, but the sunny, misty morning was very nice. More to come.

The colors in the sky are rich here in front of this beautiful and vibrant city, with the lights just poking through the near silhouette of the skyline. The sun is shining through the windows of the Smith Tower!

Paradise Valley, November 2023

This lovely park is in Snohomish County, not far from Maltby. It's a large park with many trails and various flora, with biking, equestrian and dog-walking.

I ran into this bright red/orange tree and the waning light. I need to back and capture this again with better light before the leaves fall. For another shot with brighter, earlier sun, see the following gallery:
