Today would have been John Stamets' 69th birthday. Over his long career, John constantly looked for new ways to portray the world around him. In this photo taken by his friend Skip Kerr mid-1990s, John showed a steel frame he welded for one of his photographs of the Seattle Art Museum under construction.

John documented the people and architecture of Seattle for more than four decades. The Seattle Times published an insightful retrospective of John's life and work following his death in 2014. You can read his obituary here: https://bit.ly/2Hb3lqh

John Stamets never went anywhere without a camera. As he bicycled to work on the morning of February 25, 1987, he stopped to photograph UW Husky Stadium under construction. Suddenly he began snapping pictures as the 250-ton structure collapsed to the ground in just 12 seconds.

To commemorate the event, John produced a card entitled "Gravity 1, UW 0," with his series of nine photos documenting the stadium collapse. Years later he talked about the experience in an interview with the UW alumni magazine: www.washington.edu/alumni/columns/dec96/back_pages1296.html

Last week Nick Setten and Mark Musick visited the new display of photos selected from the John Stamets Portrait of a Market Exhibit. See them weekdays on the third floor of the Economy Market Building, located at the south end of the Pike Place Market. The photos are displayed in the hallway adjacent to the offices for the Pike Place Market Foundation, HistoryLink.org, and Washington State Farmers Market Association.

The Portrait of a Market Exhibit will be featured in the First Thursday Art Walk starting April 5th in the Pike Place Market Commons. We'll post details on the event in a few weeks.

In the midst of swirling November rain and winds, Paul Stamets joined with members of the Pike Place community to dedicate the Portrait of a Market Exhibit.

Kate Krafft, Friends of the Market Vice President, spoke about her long friendship with John Stamets and the development of the exhibit. Paul expressed his family's gratitude for the recognition given John's work and he formally presented the twenty-two beautifully restored archival prints to Lillian Sherman, Executive Director of the Pike Place Market Foundation.

The Portrait of a Market Exhibit was donated for the permanent collection of the Market Commons, the Pile Place Market Foundation's new neighborhood center. The photos will be exhibited for several weeks, and then will be on rotating display in the Market Commons, located at 1901 Western Ave, just below the Pike Place Market.
