A west coast sunset courtesy of a trip out to Seattle earlier this month for a fall workshop (tag-teaming with helping some yerds kick off their year!).

Fading light + color gradient sky practically demanded a silhouette shot, so of course I obliged. 😁

If you love the look but aren’t sure how to pull it off…it’s easier than you think!

Basically you want to think of the light itself as your subject. So shoot towards the light and set your exposure to properly expose the sky (or even underexpose it just a tad). Since you’re facing the shadow side of any people or objects in the frame, voila, silhouettes.

And EXPO is a wrap! A whirlwind couple of days, but a great time working with a pretty incredible group of photographers during our extended photography track yesterday. So proud of their all-in attitude and the images they captured. I have no doubt they’ll do great things this year! 😁

The way I see it, when you approach a photo op (whether on assignment or just shooting for you), your first images are carrying a little extra baggage…orientation and acclimation.

You’re figuring out your surroundings—what you have to work with, the opportunities and challenges of the environment—and reestablishing your confidence in your abilities as a photographer.

Once that’s taken care of, you can begin to focus more on your subject(s) and understand what story you’re wanting to capture and how best to make that happen.

And sometimes you’ll also find yourself confronting assumption…pushing past your own idea of what “the best shot” ought to look like.

So don’t be in too big of a rush to say “I’ve got the shot!” and move on to the next thing, spend time exploring your subject and moving beyond the obvious.

Frame within a frame (aka internal framing) is one of my favorite go-to composition techniques!

If you’re not familiar, this is where you purposely include something in your image that creates a border, or frame, around your subject.

Internal framing can strengthen your image in a few different ways...

draw attention to your subject…

give context…

add depth.

And one of the best things about this technique? Just about anything can serve as a frame.

So you don’t have to worry about what a frame is supposed to be, you just need to remember what a frame does. 😎

Photography can be your ticket to getting behind-the-scenes access to all sorts of places and events around your school. That’s a pretty sweet deal itself, but what do you say we expand our horizons just a bit! 😎

Answer this…you get an all-access photo pass to the event of your choice (any industry, worldwide), what’s your first pick?

A quick little inspiration share of something I think you should definitely check out…

It’s a recent blog post from Joe McNally—one of my favorite photographers and an absolute legend behind the camera.

The post is crafted around a portrait he created of Mikhail Gorbachev back in the late 90’s.

It’s a truly striking photo, and the more I see it, the more I appreciate how skillfully McNally wove together art and story within a beautifully simple image (and the story behind it is pretty incredible as well).

Head to my bio for the link.

Story is king, but the more you improve your technical skills and creative eye, the better you will be at capturing images that communicate the story in a way that’s clear and engaging.

Your turn! What’s one area of photography you’d like to improve in right now?

Going a bit more personal today…
We’re getting ready to celebrate this little guy’s 1st birthday on Saturday so I thought I’d do a little TBT with a favorite image I captured of him last year (barely 3 weeks old…where did the time go! 😭).

I love the late afternoon light, I love how he’s framed within the shadows from the window grid, and I love that his big brother decided to sneak a few kisses in as I was framing up the shot.

Working professionally or just documenting family moments at home in the kitchen on a lazy Sunday afternoon…it doesn’t matter which, I’m always watching for light and story.

What’s an ordinary/random everyday place that stops you in your tracks with beautiful light?

Some simple words of wisdom from a living legend. This little gem is from McNally’s book The Moment It Clicks (Pro tip: put it on your shortlist! 🙂).

The advice comes directly from his experience as an editorial photographer, but the same wisdom applies in most any area of photography, whether you’re shooting editorial, commercial, sports, wedding, documentary, portrait, lifestyle, event…whatever.

Because here’s the main idea…

If you have a planned photo in mind or are working within a specific focus, awesome…go ahead and create that photo! But after you nail that shot don’t immediately shut down and move on, keep watching and stay ready to capture what happens next.

Often times the best photo is one we didn’t intend to take.

Had a great time Friday with GHC’s staff in a 1-day cram-session Photo Basics workshop!

Cameras, lenses, exposure, composition, light, story…we covered A TON of ground and they handled it like champs. 🙌🏼

And bonus…they’re signing on as YPM members, which means we get to keep the adventure going over the next year. 😁

Pumped to see them put what they’re learning into practice! 📸
