I thought I would share, as my first ever FB post, the story of this photo.
This was one of those rare, exhilarating, unplanned moments when the natural world completely and with wild abandon utterly blew my mind. I was hoping to get a few shots of Mt Rainier and some star trails, and was hunkered down waiting for dusk to darken to night. I began to notice a subtle, strange glow on the northeast side of Mt. Rainier. It got brighter. And brighter. Rainier was on fire. Wait - a glacier-covered mountain is on fire? And brighter. Rainier had just erupted (well, it is an dormant-slash-active volcano). Ohmygodwhyisthatlightgettingbrighter? Martians had landed. Had to be. Seriously these were the thoughts racing through my mind as I was trying to figure out what the heck was causing an eerie glow to rise and grow. The lenticular cloud that had been orbiting Rainier all afternoon began to shimmer, and suddenly it appeared - a full moon. DUH. The full moon was rising directly behind Mt Rainier and created one of the most enchanting scenes I have ever had the privilege of watching. Between laughing at myself like a crazy person (really Caren - Martians??), fumbling with a film camera and frozen fingers, and being downright incredulous at what I was witnessing, I am still amazed I was able to operate my camera as the scene unfolded. In less than five minutes, it was over. Try to surpass THAT, silly Martians.

Blast from the past - my very first attempt at isolating the subject and layering my photos with textures. Hat tip to Doug Landreth for teaching me this technique and changing everything for me. Turned out pretty good! Still looks like he wants to eat me, though
