☀️ It May Be Summer in the PNW, But Winter Is Closer Than You Think

While we're soaking up the best of summer here in the Pacific Northwest, there's something to be said for planning ahead.

Because before we know it, the rain will return, the days will shorten, and many of us will start dreaming about sunshine again.

That's where Arizona comes in.

Wide-open desert skies. Warm afternoons by the pool. Spectacular sunsets. The kind of place where your biggest decision might be whether to relax poolside or relax poolside a little longer. 🏜️🏊☀️

Recent guest Miguel summed up his stay at Ocean's Daughter Desert Retreat perfectly:

"Very responsive host :) place was wonderful and instructions were very clear ..we enjoyed the pool :)"

Simple. Easy. Relaxing.

If you're already thinking about a winter escape, now is actually the best time to start planning. The most sought-after dates fill quickly, and Arizona's sunshine has a way of calling people back year after year.

Where do you dream of escaping when winter arrives? This home in Bullhead City, Arizona, is just ten minutes from Laughlin and 90 minutes from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Some of the best adventures here don’t require a plan at all 🌊🌲

🚶‍♂️ A slow walk down a forest path, a stretch of quiet beach at low tide, or even a drive 🚗 through familiar backroads always seems to offer something new—if you’re willing to notice it. Driftwood patterns that weren’t there yesterday, light shifting through the trees, wildflowers along the shoulder of a road you’ve driven a hundred times.

Even wandering through neighborhood gardens can feel like a little discovery walk of its own—each one telling its own seasonal story 🌸📷

That’s what makes this corner of the PNW so special: it never really stops surprising you, even in the places you think you already know.

Where have you noticed unexpected beauty lately?

🌊🪨🏜️

This view from Shoshone Falls looks out over one of the most powerful landscapes in the Northwest.

The Snake River Canyon drops to depths of roughly 1,000 feet, carved over millions of years as water cut through thick layers of ancient basalt 🪨 left by massive volcanic flows.

The result is a wide, steep-walled canyon that feels almost designed—sharp edges, deep cuts, and a river still actively shaping it below.

Just downstream, the canyon opens to nearly a mile-wide span, the same stretch that became famous in 1974 when stunt performer Evel Knievel attempted to cross it using a rocket-powered Skycycle 🚀 instead of a motorcycle 🏍️.

The attempt ended when a parachute 🪂 deployed early, bringing the craft back into the canyon rather than across it—but the landscape itself remains the real story.

🌋 Ancient lava flows
🌊 Constant river erosion
🪨 Massive basalt walls
🏜️ A canyon still being carved today

From above Shoshone Falls 🌄, you’re not just looking at a waterfall—you’re looking into deep time written in stone.

🔥 What stands out more to you here—the force of the river or the scale of what it carved?

Casper the Friendly 🐐 is at it again… and he’s definitely rewriting the rules of “outdoor livestock.”

He’s officially graduated from full-time barn goat to part-time porch supervisor. 🏠 And honestly? He acts like he pays rent now.

With Nemo gone, Casper and Bettina the Norwegian Fjord 🐎 have formed what can only be described as a backyard alliance. The yard has turned into their personal luxury resort… grazing, roaming, and generally behaving like the place was designed entirely for them.

There’s a certain confidence to it too—like they’ve always known this was their kingdom and we were just visiting. 🌹

It’s hard to be mad when it’s this entertaining… but I’m starting to suspect I’m no longer the homeowner. Just staff.

What would you do if your animals started acting like they owned the place? 😄

🌬️ The wind hasn't changed. Our use of it has.

A hundred years ago, a farm windmill was one of the most practical tools a farmer could own. It sat over a well or spring, turned with the wind, and pumped water. Simple. Reliable. Useful.

Today, the windmills are giants.

They line the ridges above farm country, generating electricity instead of pumping water. They're impossible to miss and have become as much a part of the modern landscape as grain elevators and irrigation pivots.

I find the contrast fascinating.

The old windmills were built to solve a local problem. A farmer needed water.

The new ones are built to solve a much bigger challenge.

Different goals. Different scale. Same wind.

When I pass one of those old farm windmills still standing in ghost homestead I always slow down for a second look. They remind me that some of the most important inventions aren't always the biggest ones.

🌾💨

Which landscape feels more like farm country to you: the classic water-pumping windmill or the modern wind turbine?

🌲 Big Cedar Boardwalk — Rockaway Beach, Oregon

A short, accessible Oregon Coast boardwalk that leads into one of the area’s most striking natural landmarks.

The route is a flat out-and-back trail of approximately 1.1 miles round trip, moving from roadside wetland into shaded coastal forest.

🌿 Wetland transition zone
🌫️ Noticeable drop in highway noise
🌲 Increasing forest density and canopy cover leading to a single focal point

At the end of the boardwalk stands the Big Cedar:

* Height: ~154 feet
* Circumference: ~49 feet
* Age: estimated 500–1,200 years

A western red cedar representing a rare surviving example of the region’s old coastal rainforest ecosystem.

Once far more widespread along the Oregon Coast, old-growth cedar forests played a critical ecological role in soil stability, habitat structure, and long-term forest resilience. Remaining mature specimens like this are increasingly uncommon.

The boardwalk provides close viewing access while protecting the surrounding root zone and understory environment.

📍 TRAIL DETAILS:
🚶 1.1 miles round trip (out-and-back boardwalk)
🚗 Small roadside parking pullout off Hwy 101
🐕 Leashed dogs allowed (follow posted signage)
🚻 Restrooms available at the trailhead

A short walk that resolves into a strong sense of place.

🐋 One of Westport's most fascinating attractions isn't just the whale skeleton—it's the story behind it.

The gray whale skeleton at the Westport Maritime Museum has been inspiring visitors for decades. Suspended overhead inside its dedicated display building, it gives people a rare chance to appreciate the immense size and beauty of these ocean giants.

What many visitors don't realize is that exhibits like this don't simply appear. They are the result of vision, planning, fundraising, and community effort.

The structure housing the skeleton was specifically designed to protect and showcase the exhibit, creating an experience that has educated generations of visitors about marine life along the Washington coast.

It's the kind of place that reminds us how much local history exists behind the destinations we visit.

If you're exploring the Washington coast, the whale skeleton display is well worth adding to your Westport itinerary.

🐋 Have you seen it in person?

This is one of those hikes that feels easy until you’re standing at the top.

The Davis Dam Overlook Trail on the Nevada side of the Colorado River is a short desert route made up of connected gravel paths and foot tracks that climb steadily above the river.

It’s a couple miles round trip depending on how you move through the trail network. The terrain is loose dirt, rock, and open desert the entire way — no shade, just steady sun and gradual elevation gain.

At the top, the trail opens into a high overlook above Pyramid Canyon. The Colorado River bends through the canyon below, with Davis Dam sitting in the distance.

It’s a great payoff for a simple hike — and the overlook is high enough that it can catch you off guard if you’re not great with heights.

🐋 Why is Depoe Bay so captivating?

Because nowhere else on the Oregon Coast packs this much into one tiny town.

🌊 Home to the world's smallest navigable harbor.

🌉 The iconic Depoe Bay Bridge was completed in 1927 and is one of Oregon's most recognizable coastal landmarks.

🐋 Depoe Bay is known as Oregon's Whale Watching Capital, with resident gray whales often visible from shore year-round.

⛵ Fishing boats and whale-watch vessels navigate a harbor channel that's only about 50 feet wide at its narrowest point.

🪨 The coastline is made of ancient basalt lava flows, creating dramatic cliffs, sea-carved rock formations, tide pools, and powerful blowholes like the nearby Spouting Horn.

🌊 During winter storms, waves can explode against the seawall just feet from visitors standing along Highway 101.

🛍️ Shops, galleries, restaurants, and ocean viewpoints are all packed into a walkable waterfront district.

✨ But the real secret isn't any one attraction.

It's the feeling that the ocean is part of the town itself. The whales, the waves, the boats, the bridge, and the cliffs all share the same small stage.

Depoe Bay isn't the biggest town on the Oregon Coast but it may be the most dramatic.

What's the first thing you think of when someone says "Depoe Bay"?

🐋🌊🌉

🐋 Tiny town. Huge personality.
