This old gal took a talon to the face, just missing her eye. Felt very fresh when I took this image of her, and after watching her all day, I was less and less surprised she was on the receiving end of this. She was aggressive, vicious, territorial and was instigating more incidents on this oyster bed than any other eagle out there. As you can imagine, I fell hard for this one. She bares an undeniable scar under that eye to this day. 🦅❤️🦅⁣

Hands down (wings down 🤔) the hardest type of photo for me to edit - so I don’t, really. These two had been tussling all morning and then flew over me in fairly close range. The PNW is famous for its weather, and a dull, rainy sky with the sun who knows where left this pretty high key. Do I edit heavily to bring out some wing detail, or accept it for what it is? You can see what I chose. 🦅🦅

This big, bad-ass girl got herself into this dive in a matter of seconds. As she went down, she began pulling those wings in tight to increase her dive speed. A bald eagle can reach about 75–100 miles per hour when diving (called a stoop). She didn’t have enough sky to get going that fast - she was about 40-50 feet in the air - but this was impressive to see nonetheless.⁣

Two bald eagles, mid-air, carving the sky together over the Hood Canal in Seabeck, Washington. My R5 does a great job freezing the action (f/4 doesn’t hurt, either 😉) but it’s hard to explain how quickly these moments happen. It’s truly seconds. Luckily, on this morning, these two tussled repeatedly. I kept an eye on them and got a handful of good shots. Lovers or enemies? Always hard to tell with bald eagles. 🦅☠️🦅⁣

My first true bald eagle outing of the winter season. I went to one of my favorite haunts north of Denver, and I was not expecting a lot of eagles - it’s been too warm to push them south into Colorado. That said, I did find this guy. I saw him in a tree and tried to be casual as I approached him. Typically, if a bald eagle thinks you haven’t seen it, it’ll stay put. The moment I lifted my lens to get him in frame, he flew off. I watched him, disappointed, but then, much to my surprise, he banked left and came back my way, heading to the same tree he had been in before. I captured this lovely shot of him en route with the sun on his back. I love these birds and am excited for the rest of the season with them. 🦅🦅⁣
