Thank Your Lucky Stars

Sea Stars I couldn't wait to see my old friends, the sea stars. Four years ago, almost to the day, we visited Bandon Beach on the Oregon coast, mainly looking for these creatures. We even wrote about it in: Reaching for the Stars. Our hotel is right on the beach fording us many opportunities to shoot during nice light, predominantly sunrise and sunset....

Living on the water – Can you imagine? We were off to visit a couple of floating fishing villages east of Santa Marta, Nueva Venecia and Buena Vista. Indigenous Peoples of Colombia

A photography trip to Colombia would not be complete without visiting an indigenous community. We were fortunate to visit three, the Wiwa people, the Kogui people, and the Wayuu people, all of which we photographed. They all maintain strong spiritual connections to the land, viewing mountains, rivers, and animals as part of a living, sacred balance. Oral traditions, ceremonial dances, intricate weaving, and community decision-making, all guided by elders, reinforce a worldview rooted in respect for nature, ancestral knowledge, and collective responsibility....

A Toucan Surprise

Colombia is a rich habitat for birds, in fact it is the worlds leading country for bird diversity. There are close to 2000 different species and we wanted to take advantage of this opportunity on our trip to Colombia. For Jeff and I, as photographers there are two types of birding options: We go to them by touring their environment. For us, this is a walk through the woods, scrub or jungle to spot birds with a local guide....

Bird Stories

One of the highlights of our Colombian trip was bird photography. Our goal was to photograph as many big and/or colorful birds as we could find. Colombia did not disappoint!
