This cozy in-home maternity session was full of love and the sweet rhythm of everyday life.

During in-home maternity sessions—especially with toddlers—I focus on creating space for real connection, not perfect poses. That means no pressure to smile, no “look at the camera!” and absolutely no threats or bribes.

Let me tell you about a moment that captured everything I love about in-home sessions.

During a recent session, mom shared with me ahead of time that her toddler had started enjoying music. When I arrived at their home and noticed a record player in the living room, I knew instantly—it had to be part of their story.
I asked if they’d like to play a record to start the session, and their little boy lit up. He helped his dad put the record on, dancing around with the biggest smile before snuggling up on the sofa with his parents and baby sister. That joy? That connection? That’s what I’m always looking to capture.
This session was one of my favorites this year—not just because of the beautiful light or cozy home, but because of the parents’ willingness to trust me. They followed my lead, stayed present, and let the session unfold naturally.

That’s how we create magic together.

For me, a successful session is about more than delivering a beautiful gallery—
It’s about making the experience feel good.

Effortless. Relaxed. Meaningful.

My Number 1 Tip for Including Toddlers in Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

One of the biggest concerns I hear from parents is:

“What if my toddler doesn’t cooperate?”
Let’s be honest—toddlers are unpredictable. Maybe your little one is full of energy and not interested in snuggling their new baby sibling. Maybe they’d rather play solo than sit still. And you know what? That’s completely okay.

The beauty of in-home lifestyle newborn sessions is that they don’t require perfect behavior or stiff poses. Instead, they allow us to capture your family just as you are—playful, loving, and real.

My tip:
➡️Let go of specific expectations about how your toddler should behave or what your images should look like. Focus instead on how we can make the experience fun and enjoyable—for everyone.

I build in time for toddlers to warm up, take breaks, and do their own thing. Sometimes that means playing nearby or showing me a favorite toy, while I quietly document moments between baby and parents.
What toddlers really want is to feel seen—and that’s where I come in. I’ll meet your little one where they are, on their terms, and create space for authentic moments to unfold naturally.

Whether your kids are toddlers or teens, we’ll have a playful session that reflects your family’s unique vibe.

We’ll start with a few timeless, must-have shots (perfect for the holiday card!), then ease into movement—walking, snuggling, and playing—to capture those natural, joy-filled moments you’ll treasure forever.

One of my favorite ways to wrap up a session is letting the kids run under the blanket—always a crowd pleaser! This time, Dad had the brilliant idea to have them jump over it instead. Of course I said yes… and the kids loved it even more! That last shot of them all mid-air? Pure joy.

It’s been such a joy photographing this sweet couple three times now—first during their maternity session in Bernardsville last March, then in their cozy Fanwood home to welcome baby Joey in May, and now this past spring as he’s grown into the cutest nine-month-old.

During this session, both mom and dad shared that Joey rarely smiles for the camera and tends to be a bit more serious. And you know what? I absolutely love that they embraced his unique little personality. Capturing who your child really is—that’s always my goal.

No forced smiles. No pressure to “perform.” Just connection, emotion, and real moments. Sure, I’ll always try to coax out those giggles, but I truly believe the most meaningful images come when you relax, let go of expectations, and simply engage with your kiddos. That’s when the magic happens.
