Campbellsville University, known as Campbellsville College until 1996, is home to one of the more interesting football settings in Kentucky. Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field sit near the heart of campus, surrounded by university buildings, neighborhood streets and the rolling countryside of Taylor County stretching into the distance. From above, the stadium feels woven directly into both the campus and the city around it.
The story of the field goes back to 1987, when Campbellsville revived football after decades without a team (some sources say 57 years, others say 30). Some of those first Fighting Tigers actually helped build their own field, laying sod cut from a farm along Kentucky Highway 61. Originally known as Tiger Field, it hosted its first varsity game on September 10, 1988, against Centre College. The stadium was renamed Finley Stadium in 2006 in honor of Ron Finley, the coach who helped rebuild the program and led the Tigers through 2002.
Today, the 3,500-seat stadium is much different from that original grass field. Additional seating and a four-level press box came in the late 1990s, more seating followed in 2007, and a $2 million campaign brought lights and synthetic turf in 2010. The Tigers celebrated their first-ever home night game by defeating Kentucky Christian 34-7 on the new surface. More than three decades after football returned to Campbellsville, Finley Stadium remains a place where the history of the program is still visible in the middle of a growing university campus.
