I tried to steal all my childhood photos from my parents. Well, I DID steal them, then my parents visited and stole(?) them back. My argument to them was that the pictures were of my childhood and my dad looked at me and said “but it is our parenthood.” Touché, dad. Touché.
So now family sessions are a bit different in my brain. I used to photograph from the perspective of “what will the kids want to see in 20 years?” I always included the little details of what they played with, how they held their hands or played with their hair, and definitely a portrait of mom (a la Diane Keaton in The Family Stone).
Now, I photograph sessions also thinking “what will the parents want to look back on in 20 years?” The relationships they had with each child, the relationships the kids have with each other, the relationship mom and dad had together. It all matters. It always all mattered. But now it’s a little more intentionally documented. ✨
