John Bulmer Photography

John Bulmer Photography Saratoga, New York-based commercial photographer, illustrator and creative content developer. Photography is an active pursuit that I use to define the world.

A successful image is equal parts research, technology, intuition, and luck. I spend as much time researching locations and conditions as I do behind the camera. I specialize in logistically difficult assignments and hazardous environments. www.bulmerphoto.com : 1.866.317.6777

Witness Marks 25: This year marks 25 years since 9/11, a quarter century.

One in ten Americans today have no memory of it at all. They know it the way they know any other date in a history book. (Pew Research)

That's part of why I made this: Witness Marks 25, twenty-five photographs, one for each year since, all of the same piece of steel. It's World Trade Center wreckage built into "Tempered by Memory," a sculpture by John Van Alstine and Noah Savett at High Rock Park in Saratoga Springs.

I photographed the sculpture in every season, in fog, in snow, in early morning light and late summer heat. The sequence starts close, on rust and welds and bent metal, then pulls back until the whole piece comes into view.

Twenty-five images. Twenty-five years. A way of looking at how memory holds up over that much time.

The gargoyle atop the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel tower in Oakwood Cemetery keeps watch as the sun rises.

Gargoyles originally served as water spouts to protect buildings from rain damage. Symbolically, they were seen as protectors, warding off evil spirits and reminding people of the dangers of sin. Their fearsome appearances were meant to scare away harmful forces while blending the sacred and the profane in medieval thought.
