Lesson 4: The Art of Color and Shadow

The following year, I returned for two days at the 2019 PhotoPlus Expo. One of the shooting bays was led by — an editorial and commercial photographer whose creativity instantly drew me in.

She demonstrated how to use colored lighting and shadows, paired with multiple lenses, to bring portraits to life on stage. The surreal effect of the lights transformed the model into something otherworldly.

It was the first time I truly understood how color and light could work together to tell a story beyond realism — where imagination meets illumination.

On day two of the 2019 PhotoPlus Expo, I was thrilled to photograph my first dancer. I learned that to freeze movement, I needed a high shutter speed. Using only the available light on the model, I experimented until I finally captured the motion without blur and the light just right..

These were shot at f/4.5 and 1/640 sec.

Lesson 3: Seeing Beyond the Frame — ,PhotoPlus 2019

Day two of the 2019 PhotoPlus Expo was unforgettable. I had the privilege of learning from — an internationally renowned photographer, author, and educator. He guided us through photographing a model, from posing to lighting, a little smoke effect, and then took the image he created and combined it with one of his own moon photos to form a breathtaking composite.

That moment changed how I saw photography. It was my first real glimpse into the creative power of Photoshop — where imagination meets light. I even have a behind-the-scenes showing me in the audience among hundreds of photographers, completely absorbed in the moment.

Lesson 2: The Spark of a Story

At the 2019 PhotoPlus Expo in New York City, I joined a Fujifilm photowalk where we had the chance to use one of their cameras during the session.

The only light came through the expansive windows of the Javits Center.

I photographed a beautiful model dressed as a bride, and somewhere between the flowers and the light, I caught the wedding photography bug.

I don’t shoot weddings anymore, but these were among the first bridal images I ever captured — and they still hold a special place in my journey.
