A few years back Peyton came to buy a chair from me on Facebook marketplace, and when she showed up we instantly clicked. I gave her a tour of our house, we talked about life and our love for Jesus. Now fast forward we have become dear friends and I’ve photographed her proposal and two maternity sessions. 🥹 I love watching your family grow, Peyton! Thanks for buying that chair from me 🤍

Photographed this sweet family three years ago when the kids were much tinier. There’s no greater compliment than a returning family reaching out when they find themselves back in Sarasota, and no greater reminder of how fast time flies than seeing how much the little ones have grown 🥹

I used to be so particular about the rules of photography when I started in 2015 and for many years after that, and that voice still lingers in my mind. But I’ve realized how much sweeter these moments feel when you’re ready to capture things a bit out of the box. I think the irony is that to capture the “messy middle” in a way that feels real, you really have to understand the rules of photography to mindfully break those rules. If you’ve ever tried to capture a “candid” moment only for it to be a jump scare, you know exactly what I’m talking about hahaha. The moments have to strike the right balance between messy, but thoughtfully composed. Perhaps untraditional lighting, but where is it coming in from? These things all run through my mind as I’m looking through my camera. Often times what I hope to achieve in a photo pops visually into my mind, and then I do what I have to do to create it. Sometimes it means hollering out a prompt or to encourage my subjects to lean in a little more, or sometimes it requires being quiet and just letting what’s happening happen. I do believe it’s a gift but also a skill I’ve honed in on, I’ve seen it tangibly grow as I’ve photographed hundreds of families and weddings and couples and maternity and more over the years. I have more to say on this but I’ll save it for my next post 🤓

In recent years I’ve gotten a lot quieter on this account because to be honest, I’ve been overwhelmed. On the internet with a seemingly endless onslaught of information and hate and AI, it can feel silly to show up as a small business or as a human and artist. At times, it feels shallow. How can I post about my life when so many are struggling so much? Other times perhaps it feels vain, what do I have to contribute to this endless void that is the internet? But the more I think about it, this is actually when artists and real humans are needed most. This is a time in history when we need people to be their real, imperfect selves more than ever!

I’d like to show up more often on here and show more of my work and bits of my life. It might be a bit inconsistent at times, but that’s because it’ll be me. I have a 1 year old now, I’m a homemaker and a wife, I’m running a photography business while also being a stay at home mom. But you can be sure when you see me post it’s the real me, not an AI caption or someone else running my account. I want to show up as a real human and artist because I think our world and Instagram especially is seriously missing that.

If this resonates at all with you and you made it this far, say hi! Let’s connect and support each other as actual humans and not robots behind the screen!

Xoxo!

Photographing my past wedding couples as their families grow is actually how I fell in love with family photography in the first place. Watching your families grow and being invited back to capture each new chapter is the greatest honor and truly my favorite part of what I do. Thank you to every family who trusts me again and again. Documenting your legacy is the most meaningful (and fun!) work I could ask for 🤍
