I've learned that when you're a business owner, a large part of your job is educating consumers to help them understand what you do and how to value it properly.
When you're getting married you don't think twice about a dress being $800-$5,000
Flowers costing $1,500-$3,500
Cake $300-$800
DJ $1,000-$2,500
An officiant $200-$450
Venue $3,000-$15,000
Food $3,000-$15,000
Now let's chat about photography and videography. This is the only service besides the venue (cleanup) that has any backend work. Yet seemingly the service most consumers don't know how to value appropriately. And even try to negotiate down to the lowest possible dollar.
Also, it's the one item you invest in that actually grows in value after you purchase it. Memories are an investment that pays you back year after year. It's what helps you to remember when your mom (who hasn't been mobile for the last 6 years of her life) stood up to dance with her oldest son, and didn't leave a dry eye in the room. It's how you remember what the dress of your dreams looked, that's now packed away in a box. It's how you remember what flowers you had when you're daughter wants to recreate your boutique so she can carry the same one down the isle on her big day.
When you go with the lowest price over wanting the best overall experience and quality. You're telling whomever you hire that your memories aren't that important to you. And likely they will treat them as such.
I wish someone had told me this before my wedding photography disaster.
