The collective noun for roseate spoonbills is quite appropriately a "bowl".

And with water levels rapidly dropping in the Myakka River system, our bowl of spoonies is thankfully overflowing!

Like their pals the wood storks, spoonbills, a Florida native State-designated threatened species (due to habitat loss and degradation, pesticides, and illegal shootings) feed in shallow waters, and greatly benefit from the natural draw down of the Myakka River system.

Thanks to habitat restoration efforts (including two dam removals), they are enjoying more extensive shorelines and shallows. Ongoing efforts to designate the Myakka River in Sarasota County as a National Partnership Wild and Scenic River will further increase opportunities to protect and enhance the river's outstanding values, including its incredible native wildlife!

Low water levels = great foraging conditions for wood storks, a federally-designated Threatened bird species due to habitat loss and altered hydrocycles.

It's great to see lots of juveniles in the park this year - Unlike adult birds, their heads and necks are feathered.

Snowy egrets have at least 21 techniques for catching fish - the widest repertoire of hunting and fishing techniques among wading birds. Many of these foraging techniques utilize their unique "golden slippers" to attract, surprise or otherwise lure fish.

My favorite technique by far is when snowy egrets hunt by flying low above a body of water, dangling their feet in and out. A beautiful sight to behold, especially when their maneuvers include gracefully evading an alligator obstacle course! 😍
