“I’m Rightly Rogue”

Rogue mind likes to talk about Watches
Tons of kind thoughts interest me
but stay lifeless on my tongue
I wish they would interest my mouth
and make an appearance today

Noah is a writer and a poet. He also has autism and apraxia of speech. This makes it challenging for him to express himself intently. His life changed when his parents discovered “spelling,” a way of communicating through a letter-board or keyboard.

When you realize Noah has apraxia, this poem means more. How does it feel to have thoughts you can’t express? Those thoughts that “stay lifeless” on your tongue. What do you think about Noah’s poem?

What’s the greatest challenge for someone like James?

James was born with Down syndrome and multiple health issues. Larkin recognizes those obstacles. But ultimately the greatest challenge is the lack of support for those with disabilities.

“It’s hard to find people that are accepting and willing to support him.”

For many families it’s a constant struggle advocating for their children with disabilities. Whether it’s medical, educational, or societal- there’s always a hill to climb. But for those like Larkin, that uphill battle is worth it- because their children are worth it.

Sean realized he had a problem when a few close friends were honest with him. They hated who he was when he was drinking and using drugs. But their honesty made it harder for Sean to sit comfortably with his addiction. Instead he had to see who he was becoming and decide whether or not he was going to change.

Sean chose to get help.

Sometimes we need our friends to be honest with us so we can grow and change.

It’s a life changing experience when your child is born with a disability. It can also be extremely isolating and overwhelming. When Lyle joined a dad’s hiking group hosted by Common Ground Society, he found others who were going through the same challenges. Having those connections helped Lyle feel validated. The other dads in the group shared insight from their own experiences which helped Lyle find some peace with this new chapter in his life.

Chris may have autism but he still wants to contribute to society. He works a part-time job and takes a bus to and from work. He hopes to move up in his job and keep trying new things.

Chris wants to be independent like the rest of us. He wants to eventually move out of the house into his own place. But many like Chris don’t always have this opportunity and this is a struggle for many families.

Palmer Davis struggled with addiction for years. In recovery he learned how important it is to step outside of oneself. We’re not the center of the universe. And maybe this life isn’t just about us. Maybe it’s about others too.

Palmer found sobriety through a nonprofit called Haven House in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.

Diana suffered from preeclampsia and her daughter, Aurora, nearly died when she was born. She was immediately sent to the NICU. Diana didn’t get to see her daughter after the birth. She had dreams Aurora was kidnapped. It wasn’t until Christina showed Diana a photo of Aurora that she believed she was safe. When she was finally able to see her, they placed Aurora against her chest.

“This is all I ever wanted. To hold my baby.”

Painting is spiritual for Bradley. She’s figured out how to move through life by what the paint teaches her. In painting and in life, mistakes are inevitable. We get frustrated when they happen, but it’s how we work through the mistakes that matters most. We can use our blemishes purposefully.

Bradley is using this metaphor in the real world. She teaches an art program to inmates to help with rehabilitation.
