Drawing class, week three! ✏️

Hands used to be one of the things I was terrible at drawing. So I decided that whenever I felt like doodling, I would draw my hand.

Over and over and over.

Eventually, it became my go-to doodle. By the time I drew this one, I could practically draw a hand in my sleep.

I really wish I had saved one of those early drawings when I was still terrible at them, because it would be the perfect example for my students now: being bad at something is not proof that you can't do it. Sometimes it just means you haven't drawn it enough yet.

And that hand I practiced all those years ago?

It eventually became the hand in my logo. 🤍

Funny how the thing I practiced because I couldn't draw it became one of the things that represents me today.

In honor of my drawing classes starting up today, I had to pull out this drawing I did for my dad back in high school art class.

Art class was always a little different for me. It was the place where I felt confident in something I could do, and where I started learning the skills that eventually shaped so much of my life — long before I ever imagined I’d be teaching them myself.

There’s something pretty special about getting to pass that along to a new group of students today. 🤍

Drawing class, week two! ✏️

Another one from the high school archives — and this drawing has a fun little place in my history.

Back in the ’90s, this became one of the first prints I ever made of my artwork. I sold them in a local store in my hometown of Enterprise, Alabama, which was pretty exciting for a high school kid who loved to draw.

It’s funny looking back now and realizing that was my first tiny taste of selling my own artwork — long before photography, websites, Etsy shops, or any idea that I’d eventually be teaching art myself.

I’m loving getting to go back to where it all started while beginning this new chapter with my drawing students. 🤍
