Light Falls Differently in Ocala ~ Part II

Commissioned portraiture by Erika Moore  with “Hollywood,” a 13-year-old American Warmblood, breeding stallion and a Hunter Derby rockstar! 🌟

The light in Ocala continues to surprise me.

Coming from the stark clarity of the New Mexico desert, I’ve found myself slowing down here ~ watching how the softer atmosphere shifts the mood, the movement, even the way the horses seem to inhabit the landscape.

Each session feels less about chasing light and more about settling into it.

Light Falls Differently in Ocala ~ Part I

Commissioned portraiture by Mandy Miller featuring her 11-year-old Holsteiner gelding, Shemya.

From the high desert of New Mexico to the lush landscape of Ocala, Florida, I became intrigued by how the quality of light uniquely shapes each landscape.

The desert feels sharp and exposed. Ocala moves differently ~ softer, slower, more atmospheric.

It took time to settle into the rhythm of the light and landscape here, allowing both myself and the work to evolve alongside it.

My journey in photography began in the darkroom in the early ‘70s. 
 
How I deeply miss the magic of playing with light under the enlarger, mixing chemicals/toners ~ slowly watching the image come to life in the developer tray. This series pays homage to the beauty of stripping color from a photograph, allowing the viewer to focus on form, light, and mystery.

Commissioned Portraiture for Carolyn Hollingsworth. 
 
An accomplished film industry professional, Carolyn spent two decades in Hollywood before transitioning to the growing Santa Fe production scene. 
 
This Modern Cowgirl is defined by action: she co-pilots helicopters, rides horses & motorcycles, and swims the challenging English and Catalina Channels. (Yes, seriously!) 
 
These portraits aimed to distill the essence of her softness and beauty. Therefore, I chose to shoot and process the images in black and white.

Personal work — nothing makes my heart sing, and my camera ignite more than witnessing these Whippets in their pure natural form. Amaya, my black and white hound (soul dog), along with the squad: Nala & Tazzi Barker 🐾 and new friend Clooney 🐾, shred the grass with speed and vivacious energy, free to be their absolute Whippet selves.

Grit, Grace, and a few Wild Moments. These images are a follow-up to the first series I documented at Trinity Ranch a Western Horsemanship Clinic spearheaded by Cat Parks. 
 
The art shots are the best part of the job, as it’s usually spontaneous and instinctive, testing my ability to stay on my toes and capture the unexpected!
