Madeline left me on February 11, 2026. After she was gone, I was heartbroken, and I still had so much love for her with nowhere to put it. So I signed up to volunteer at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, just to be close to dogs again.🥲

On my very first official day as a volunteer, eight German Shepherd puppies arrived. The moment I saw Enoki, I knew I was taking her home. As soon as my shift ended, I completed the adoption right away.😍

That first week, I was busy all over again getting a dog bed, new toys, preparing fresh chicken. It felt like becoming a mom all over again.

We gave Enoki a new name, Kira, an Irish name meaning “dark-haired.”

Since the day I decided to adopt her, I haven’t cried on my runs anymore. For the first time, the future feels like something I can look forward to. I run the same paths I used to walk with Madeline and now I get to walk them again with Kira by my side.🥰

They say your old dog sends you the next one. Because of Madeline, I found my way to the shelter and then I found you, Kira.🥹

Love never really leaves it just finds its way back to us. And now it’s you.

Maybe you are the last gift she left for me and I promise to spend all your days loving you with all my heart.♥️
