Speckled Rattlesnake

This tiny rattlesnake was conveniently coiled up, unmoving, in the middle of the walkway next to our house. Despite me nearly stepping on it, it did not lunge at me or move in the slightest.

Greater Roadrunner

While they aren't faster than a coyote, roadrunners are faster than humans and can be frequently seen chasing down lizards and snakes through arid habitats.

Fun fact: Greater Roadrunners can eat poisonous prey, like rattlesnakes, without ill effects.

Southern Cassowary

One of three species of cassowary, the southern cassowary is found throughout Eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Northeastern Australia. In Australia, they are both endangered (due mainly to habitat destruction and fragmentation) and a keystone species. They are important seed dispersers; their diet consists primarily of fruit, some of which possess seeds that will only germinate after passing through the digestive tract of a cassowary. As such, many of Tropical North Queensland's rainforest plants depend on cassowaries and will suffer if they continue to decline.

Fun fact: The large vertical disc on their heads functions as a radiator, allowing them to shed heat during sweltering days.

Pacific Baza

At first glance, you might think the Pacific Baza lives up to its hawk-like appearance and has solely a carnivorous diet. While it is a hawk, it is also an omnivore and regularly eats fruits and various small animals.
