I wasn't expecting that, honestly! That is the Columbia River Gorge behind them, late afternoon light going soft, and once we got going neither one of them was thinking about posing.

Here is the thing I tell almost every couple before we start: the first ten minutes are always a little awkward. You do not know where to put your hands, you feel like you are performing, and the camera feels like it is staring at you. So I just get people moving. Walk over here, he picks her up, she picks him up, they laugh, and then something real happens. By the time we hit the twenty minute mark most couples have forgotten I am there.

Sage green and golden hour at the farm. This is one of my favorite outfit choices I have ever seen for a maternity session. The soft floral maxi, the warm evening light, and a little one running around in the background being completely herself. That is a real maternity photo.

If you are planning a maternity session and wondering what to wear, start with a long dress in a muted or earthy tone. Avoid busy prints and anything too tight. You want the focus on your belly, not the pattern. Flowy fabric photographs beautifully in outdoor light, especially in the hour before sunset.

And if your toddler refuses to cooperate, do not stress. Some of my favorite images from sessions like this one come from the candid moments when the kids are just doing their thing.

This little guy showed up to his milestone session absolutely ready to go. Brown Carhartt overalls, a big grin, and very little patience for sitting still.

If you are planning a milestone or sitter session and wondering what to dress your baby in, here is what I tell every parent. Go with something that has some texture or detail. Overalls, a knit sweater, a little romper with buttons. It reads so much better on camera than a plain onesie, and it gives the photo a little something extra without competing with that sweet face.

Sessions like this one take place right here in my studio inside Revive Suites on Highway 26 in Sandy. The studio stays climate controlled year round, so baby is comfortable the whole time. And while you are here, you can book a massage, facial, or lash appointment next door at the spa. Moms have earned that.

This is one of locations that looks almost too good to be real. If you are thinking about an engagement session up on the mountain, early summer is honestly one of the best windows. The snow is still on the peak, the brush is greening up, and you are not fighting summer crowds at the trailhead. I shoot up here a lot and the light around dusk gets soft fast, so timing matters. The Oregon Coast is one of my favorite places to do engagement sessions, and Cape Kiwanda is at the top of that list. The sand dunes give you this wide open space to work with, the light in the late afternoon comes in warm and low, and the rock formations in the background do half the work for you.

If you are thinking about doing an engagement session at the coast, here is what I always tell couples. Give yourself more time than you think you need to get there. Highway 101 can slow down fast on a nice weekend, especially in summer. Plan to arrive thirty minutes before your session starts so you are not rushing across the sand and showing up flustered. And wear layers. It can be sixty degrees and calm, or it can be forty degrees and windy, sometimes within the same hour. The coast does what it wants.

Still water does something lovely to a photo. The trees double. The couple becomes the only thing moving in the whole frame. This was a lakeside engagement session and the conditions were exactly right... minus Mt Hood hiding behind a cloud gosh darn it. But these two had great attitudes about that. Calm surface, overcast sky, evergreens stacked up behind them like a wall. She leaned into him and that was the shot.
