Campfire - Maui's Two Sides⁠
:: Plan Your Trip ::⁠
There are two sides of Maui - Do Them Both: ⁠
1) The developed resort and side which includes Ka’anapali, Wailea, and . This side is really accessible from the airport, and the easiest way to unwind in Hawaii. Within an hour of landing, you can be toes deep in the sand, biting into a lilikoi or sipping our of a pineapple. This side is also where you'll find the most tourists.⁠
2) The more rugged and wild side. If this side had a home base it would have to be Hana. It's not easily accessible (a few hours drive down the 'Road to Hana', but it is tranquil and isolated.⁠
What's really interesting about the two sides is that the sun literally rises on one side and sets on the other - making a natural separation between the overall experience of the island.⁠
:: Travel Tips ::⁠
If you really want to - you'll want to do both sides. Our suggestion is to land and head straight to the Hana side. Like so many things in like, it's easier to 'ramp up' than 'wind down'. After a few days relaxing in Hana, arriving at Wailea will feel a bit like joining the circus - at first. But traveling from Wailea to Hana feels a bit boring. ⁠⁠⁠⁠

Maui's Resort Beaches⁠⠀
:: Planning Your Trip ::⁠⠀
Maui has two resort areas - Ka’anapali - - and Wailea. Ka’anapali (also called the 'West Side') has a longer history of development has all the benefits of being more in a 'city' type area. (also called the 'South Side') is the newer area, more spread out, and the beaches are less crowded. For us, we always stay down Wailea. We love the beaches and by that I mean the proximity to awesome snorkeling. On both of our last two trips, we saw day-snorkel-tours dropping their groups off near our point and when we grabbed snorkels ourselves - ran into turtles literally feet from our beach towels.⁠⠀
:: Travel Tips ::⁠⠀
- When picking a resort, check out the amenities. The Grand Wailea has a lazy river and multiple slides for kids. The Fairmont goes above and beyond for daily activities.⁠⠀
- Especially when traveling with kids, look at the daily activities. The does an amazing job with their offerings - including lei making and ukelele lessons.⁠⠀
- I think 'per bite' breakfast is the most expensive resort meal. Grab some muffins and fruit on the way to the hotel and you can save at least 25% off your food budget.⁠⠀⁠⠀⁠⠀⁠⠀

Aloha from Hana :: Maui's Best Black Sand Beach⁠⠀
:: Plan Your Trip ::⁠⠀
About fifteen before reaching the town of , you'll reach the turn out for State Park (the Black Sand Beach). Be prepared, the road is not exactly up-to-code, but is totally traversable even in a sedan. (No off-road tires necessary). The dirt road (sure we'll keep calling it a road) leads directly to the parking lot. Make sure you drive past the camping parking lots and get to the back day-use parking lot. From there, it's an easy walk to the black sand beach and the 'official blowhole'.⁠⠀
:: Travel Tips ::⁠⠀
- Beware of tiny jelly fish that can wash up on the sand.⁠⠀
- There is a harder to reach 'blowhole' if you follow the beach around and then walk down the path to the point. (While not actually a blowhole, it still has the effects of a blowhole)⁠⠀
- Obvi. Mornings are best (day trippers from the resorts haven't had time to drive down.⁠⠀⁠⠀⁠⠀⁠⠀

Wine in the Vines⁠⠀
From the first time I went to Arrington Vineyards, I fell in love. Unlike almost every other winery, this place is created just to be enjoyed. There is tons of picnic space, vines open to be wandered through, and music (most days).⁠⠀⁠⠀⁠⠀⁠⠀

The Upside Down⁠⠀
Slippery wet rock bridge across a stream - this is one of those ideas that made my father-in-law flinch as I gave walking on my hands a shot. More than anything else though - the first thing my eyes are drawn to in this photo is my calf muscles. They don't look that impressive right side up, maybe I'm doing this wrong.⁠⠀⁠⠀⁠⠀⁠⠀

Sky High

Even though I’ve been traveling to Atlanta all my life, I had no idea there was SUP, kayaking, and cliff jumping in - our paddle out here was amazing for so many reason, but most of all because it is still a pretty secret spot - with barely anyone else out on the water.
The cliff jump is a climb - there’s no other way to say that, but once you get up to the top - there is an awesome (very y’all) leap awaiting.

Silent Night⠀
When planning our trip, we were told that most often it's recommended that visitors see the on the first day. This monument is not only the most well known attraction in the city, for our generation it's also a deeply impactful place in our lives. I think this might be changing for our children's generation - when attacks of this size are more commonplace, but at least for me - the memorial here marks a very specific change in how I understood the world.⠀
We visited at night - it's nearly silent. I wasn't expecting the actual memorial size to be so massive. The scale makes the term memorial almost obsolete as it's more like a park (for lack of a better term). ⠀
Though the twin pillars at either end of the pool loom the largest, the most impact part for me - the part that gave me chills - were the empty class seats. Whenever kids are hurt I think of what Michael Brown's Mom yelled at police when she first saw her child on the ground (to paraphrase) 'he just graduated. do you know how hard is it to accomplish that.' Seeing these empty seats... I think of the life and the struggles that these young families endured and overcame up to this point, just to have all that hard work ended here.⠀⠀⠀

Date Night⠀
As the story goes, found out that it was a boring city. So they set out to change it. That was around twenty years ago, and now there are tons of new projects and fun things to do - and, really, it all started here on the water taxi and the revitalization of Bricktown. ⠀
On our trip, Jade went out with some friends, and Augustine and I got to have a Dad/Kid Date Night in Bricktown - starting with a ride on the water taxi. Towards the end of our ride, we passed through the Land Rush monument, which leaps over the stream and continues on off to the other side. Seeing it at sunset was awesome because the dark metal took on the deep yellows and oranges of the sunset.⠀⠀⠀⠀

Bicycle, BIcycle, BICYCLE
We were on a hybrid bike tour through with - part brewery tour & for our daughter part cookie tour. One of the coolest things we’re all the brightly colored murals that we got to pass by, but obviously tasting five or six different spots was the best. We always look for things like this - unique takes on city experiences - when we travel, trying to adapt adult experiences to be just right for our daughter.

Strung Out
We didn’t know that had a Ferris Wheel when we arrived - so we definitely didn’t know that the wheel is the old Santa Monica Ferris Wheel. When we pulled up to the park - I was so excited to find that it’s circled by a bunch of hammocks that are open for lounging all day and a huge green space for kids. This was one of the best finds of the trip.
