There’s something surreal about standing in the middle of the Idaho desert at 4am, watching the Milky Way rise over the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America.

This photo was taken at Bruneau Dunes State Park in southern Idaho....a place that feels completely different once the sun goes down. The park is home to an observatory and some of the darkest skies in the state, making it one of the best places in Idaho to experience the night sky.

One of my biggest goals this Milky Way season has been to create cleaner, more detailed night photos, and this photograph feels like a step in that direction. The wind-carved textures in the sand, the silence of the desert, and the galaxy stretching overhead made this one a night I won’t forget anytime soon!

Keep a lookout for more Milkyway/ Nightscape images this season!

"The Rock Hugger"

This tree looked like it was hanging on as tight as it could, wrapping itself around these boulders just to stay standing.

and I weren’t supposed to be here..
plans changed, grabbed the dogs, and went searching for something new.

One of my goals this year has been to create stronger woodland images,
and this felt like one of those moments worth slowing down for.

Turns out this whole area got torn up by the winter floods…
but standing there, it felt like a reminder...sometimes holding on is what keeps you standing.

Not every shot comes easy.

I spotted this scene from the other side of the creek and knew it was there… just out of reach.
So we pushed upstream, looking for a way across.

I still ended up with wet feet.
But sometimes that’s the cost of chasing a feeling you can’t quite explain.

Im grateful to have friends who are always down to change plans, wander off trail, and chase light into places like this.

This was my first canoe camping trip ever
and we had the whole island to ourselves.
We paddled out expecting clear skies,
but clouds hung low all day. Rain and snow moved through the mountains around us...
always close, but never quite reaching us.

So we wandered the island,
playing bottle hands, tossing bocce through the forest, just watching it all move through.
The light never really left...it just kept shifting through the clouds.

I shot this one wide to take it all in,
but it’s the light on the peaks and across the water
that made me stop.
The rest are just crops from the same frame,
So you can take a closer look at what’s happening in the distance.

3am. Freezing. Questioning my life choices...but the sky had other plans.

I went on a canoe camping trip to an island deep in North Idaho, just excited to get out there.

My plan: capture a Milky Way panorama low on the horizon. I woke up early before my alarm... had to p*e, and regretting everything.

It was too early for the shot… but once you’re up, there’s no going back.
As the Milky Way rose, the northern lights appeared, turning a simple plan into something I couldn’t have predicted.

Would you get up at 2:45am for this photo opportunity? Or am I just crazy?

The light was fading in the Fern Gully… but I had a feeling the best moment of the evening hadn’t happened yet.

Just up the trail this small waterfall sits tucked into the forest, and I had scouted a composition here the day before. My hope was that as the sun dropped behind the ridge, a little light might start streaking through the trees and catch the mist coming off the falls.

I wasn’t sure if it would happen… but it felt worth the gamble. So I packed up, moved quick, and waited.

For a few brief moments the forest lit up and the light poured through the canyon...honestly it looked better than I imagined it would!
Sometimes the best moments out here come from a mix of planning… and a little bit of hope.

Moments like this don’t last long… would you stay and watch the light or keep hiking?

Fern Gully

Sometimes the places you think you already know still have secrets.

I’ve explored the lower part of this area many times, but thanks to I finally ventured higher up. After bushwhacking through dense forest for about a mile, we stepped out into something unexpected… the ground completely blanketed in Mountain Fern Moss.

Every step felt like walking on a thick comforter. Soft, quiet, and almost silent underfoot.
The video in this post was actually from the day before while we were exploring the area. We had just missed the golden light streaking through the trees, so I knew I had to come back the very next day to catch it.

If you watch closely, you might even spot the composition for this photo while I’m walking through the forest.
There’s also an uncropped version Im curious, which one do you prefer?

This view has become a bit of a project for me.
Spring. Fall. And now winter. Winter almost didn’t happen this year. Hardly any snow.

But the day after a rare storm rolled through North Idaho, I got my chance.
I’ve come back to this spot more times than I can count, watching it shift with the light and the seasons. This winter just asked for a little more patience. The landscape moves on its own timeline.... not mine... and there’s something grounding about that.

It reminds me to slow down, to keep showing up, and to trust that the right conditions will come.
And when they do, it makes the moment that much more meaningful.

I’m curious....do you guy have a place you return to over and over, just to see how it changes?

These probably won’t be my most popular images — and I’m okay with that!
I don’t go out to photograph for the response, I go out because I’m curious what the light is going to do and how I’ll react to it.

The street moves a lot faster than the places I’m used to. No waiting for the scene to come together....just paying attention and being ready for a fraction of a second.

Same reason I shoot everything else:
to learn, to see differently, and to come home with frames that mean something to me.

If you shoot street ....what helped you slow down and really start seeing it?

Took our annual trip to Spokane with to step outside our comfort zones and try street photography, very different from our usual landscapes, and honestly a blast!

Trying different styles purely for the love of photography really changes how you see familiar subjects.

Street photographers...how’d I do? Would you consider this street photography? What should I focus on improving?

More photos to come!
