I desperately did not want to give birth in a hospital. As a kid I had spinal surgery, which meant that for a year or so my body was handled by many strangers who often did not treat me like a person. After photographing a couple of home births I saw what the experience of birth could be. I found out at 22 weeks I was having twins and I fought very hard for my birth experience not to be traumatic. I developed cholestasis, a life threatening condition that required an emergency c-section. Because this happened in March of 2020 I was not able to have .unfiltered photograph my birth like planned. Even with a trusted team in a birth center who did not question any part of my birth plan it was a medical procedure that brought up past trauma for me. I think I would have better processed my birth with photos to look back on. I wish I could show my kids photos of their birth.

Seeing birth and seeing other people’s birth photos helped normalize birth for me and prepare me for doing it myself. I am amazed at what our bodies are capable of. Let’s celebrate that not hide it.

September at Studio Sprouts we're exploring colors. With my co-teacher and friend Kim I get to think up all sorts of fun stuff to facilitate creativity and learning.
