🕰️ SF Then & Now: May 19, 1936 — no road yet.
Left: the Golden Gate Bridge mid-build, towers up and cables strung, but no deck to drive on. Construction had begun January 5, 1933, and it would still be about a year before anyone walked across.
The bridge opened to pedestrians May 27, 1937 (cars May 29), built for $35 million in 1930s dollars.

SUMMER IS OUR WINTER. 🧥
Visitors show up in June, July and August expecting beach weather — and meet the fog instead. Summer is peak fog season here, and locals have nicknames for it: June Gloom, No Sky July and Fogust. All three are earned.
Our summer just runs late. The warmest, clearest weeks of the year land in September and October, when the fog backs off and the city finally warms up.
Packing rule: bring a jacket in July. Short sleeves in October.

🌅 Dawn patrol: the bridge almost to yourself.

Sunrise Saturday is 7:27 AM — and at that hour Battery Spencer is nearly empty. The first light hits the towers, the bay is still, and you get the classic postcard view without the crowds.
Best plan: arrive by 7:00 AM for first light. Battery Spencer is the front-row seat, and Fort Point and Crissy Field are great morning backups too.

👻 Haunted SF: the Fairmont — where the ghosts tuck you in.
Sisters Tessie and Virginia Fair built this Nob Hill grande dame to honor their father, silver king James Fair. Gutted by fire after the 1906 quake, it was rebuilt by architect Julia Morgan and opened in 1907.
Legend has it the sisters never really left. Guests have reported waking to a gentle caress on the cheek — a ghostly tuck-in from the ladies of the house. And on foggy nights, some say a bride in a tattered gown still hurries between the Fairmont and Grace Cathedral: Flora Sommerton, fleeing the wedding she never wanted.

🎃 Save this for Halloween night: one SF street does trick-or-treating better than anywhere else in the city.
Fair Oaks Street, between 21st and 26th, closes to cars on Oct 31 and turns into a five-block Halloween party — Victorians decked out in lights and skeletons, neighbors handing out candy to a river of costumed kids.
Most houses start around 6 PM. Grab dinner in Noe Valley first, then walk over. Who's taking the kids this year? 👇

United just announced a brand-new nonstop between Charleston and San Francisco — seasonal service starting March 28, 2027, flying 4 times a week (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays) on Boeing 737s.
For Charleston, it's a direct link to the Bay Area — and from SFO, easy United connections across the West Coast, Asia and the Pacific. For SF, it's a whole new wave of visitors discovering the city.
And it's not just Charleston — Oklahoma City gets a new SFO nonstop the very same day. United is betting on San Francisco.

🍜 Downtown has Chinatown. The Richmond has Clement Street.
Locals call Clement SF's other Chinatown — a few dense blocks of dim sum counters, Chinese bakeries and produce markets where the lines are neighbors, not tourists.
Start at Good Luck Dim Sum (736 Clement) for takeout dumplings, grab a pork bun at Wing Lee Bakery (503 Clement), then get gloriously lost in Green Apple Books at 506 Clement — the creaky, beloved bookstore that's been there since 1967.

Left: rubble still piled in the street after the quake, wagons rolling past — and the clock tower standing untouched above it all. Right: the same tower today.
Here's the part nobody believes: from its 1898 opening until the Bay Bridge opened, this was the second-busiest transit terminal in the WORLD. Only London's Charing Cross Station handled more.
