SF Driving Is The Real Life Video Game Nobody Asked For But Everyone Plays 🚗

The Golden Gate Bridge was originally planned to be painted in bold black and yellow stripes — just like a giant bumblebee!

The U.S. Navy pushed hard for this high-visibility scheme in the 1930s. They wanted it super obvious for ships and planes navigating through San Francisco’s famous thick fog. The Army even suggested red-and-white stripes as an alternative.

But consulting architect Irving Morrow had a different vision. He fell in love with the reddish-orange primer coating on the steel beams and fought to make that the permanent color — the now-iconic International Orange.
Thankfully, he won that battle! 😄
