Once dismissed as "the bridge that couldn't be built," the Golden Gate Bridge was a dream forged against formidable odds . The vision belonged to engineer Joseph Strauss, who spent over a decade rallying support for a structure spanning the treacherous Golden Gate Strait . Construction began in 1933, a massive undertaking made safer by an ingenious $130,000 safety net slung beneath the workers . This net saved 19 men, who formed the "Halfway-to-Hell Club," though 11 others tragically perished .

The bridge's iconic International Orange color was not original intent. The steel arrived coated in the vibrant primer, and architect Irving Morrow found it perfectly complemented the natural surroundings and enhanced visibility through the fog . The bridge opened in 1937 after four years of toil, a stunning Art Deco masterpiece that, at 4,200 feet (1,280 m), became the world's longest and tallest suspension bridge . At the opening, Strauss honored his fallen workers with a poem, cementing the bridge's legacy as a triumph of both human will and ingenuity

The Birlot tidal mill on Bréhat Island is a remarkable feat of engineering dating from 1633 to 1638, built for the Duke of Penthièvre, lord of the island . It operated as a "banal" mill, meaning all local inhabitants were required to grind their grain there .

Unlike traditional mills, it harnesses tidal energy through a clever system. A stone d**e creates a 2.5-hectare pond that fills at high tide via wooden gates . When the tide recedes, the miller releases stored water, turning the 4.5-meter vertical wheel for about six hours per tide . The granite walls, nearly 3 meters thick at the base, withstand the sea's force .

The mill ground grain until 1920, when a baker began importing mainland flour, making it unprofitable . Abandoned and deteriorating, the commune purchased it in 1990 . The Association du Moulin du Birlot, formed in 1994, led restoration, and today the fully operational mill demonstrates tidal milling during summer visits

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is a historic Cape Cod-style lighthouse and museum, standing 422 feet above the ocean at the entrance to San Diego Bay. Built in 1855, it was one of the first eight lighthouses on the West Coast and, at its height of 462 feet, the highest elevated in the nation.
Despite its promise, the lofty perch proved flawed. Frequent fog and low clouds obscured its fixed white light (later changed to alternating red and white flashes) from ships. After 36 years of service, the light was extinguished on March 23, 1891, replaced by a new lighthouse at a lower elevation. The structure survived abandonment and a plan to replace it with a statue of explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, finding purpose in the 20th century painted in camouflage green as a WWII naval signal tower.
Meticulously restored by the National Park Service, it is now the centerpiece of Cabrillo National Monument. Furnished to the 1880s period of its longest-serving keeper, Robert Israel, it offers a glimpse into the life of a lightkeeper's family

The Eckmühl lighthouse is an iconic 65-meter tall granite sentinel on Brittany's Pointe de Penmarc'h, one of Europe's tallest . Its creation is rooted in a poignant story: it was funded by a bequest from Marquise de Blocqueville, who dedicated it to her father, Marshal Davout, Prince of Eckmühl. Her wish was that the "tears shed by the fatality of wars... be redeemed by lives saved from the storm" . Built between 1893 and 1897, it secures one of France's most dangerous rocky coasts .

Architecturally, it is distinguished by its construction from durable Kersanton granite and an interior staircase lined with luminous opaline tiles . Automated in 2007, it remains an active aid to navigation . It is also a major tourist attraction, open to the public for climbs up its 307 steps to a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view

The Piscine de la Plage de l'Écluse in Dinard is a historic 1920s seawater pool directly on the main beach. Built in 1927 by architect Ernest Brunnarius, its innovative design, featuring a submerged weir, uses the tide to naturally fill and refresh the pool twice daily. Originally part of a private club for the British elite who vacationed in Dinard, it allowed for safe swimming independent of the tides and currents.

Today, this distinctive Art Deco-influenced pool is a listed historical monument and remains a cherished public feature of Dinard's seaside landscape. It continues to operate freely as a tidal pool, preserving its century-old function of providing a protected saltwater swimming experience.

The harbor of Paimpol unfolds gently around its basin, where colorful boats rest on calm water and masts trace delicate lines against the Breton sky. Once a proud port for cod fishermen sailing to Iceland, the marina still carries echoes of maritime adventure and resilience. Stone quays, cafés, and narrow streets frame the harbor, inviting slow walks and lingering conversations. With the tide, the mood shifts—from quiet reflections on the water to lively scenes filled with voices and clinking glasses. Light changes everything here, soft and silvery in the morning, golden by evening. Rooted in history yet warmly alive, Paimpol’s harbor feels less like a destination and more like a moment—timeless, human, and deeply connected to the sea.

"La Croix des Veuves" (The Widows' Cross) .

This granite calvary, erected in 1714, stands on a 60-meter-high cliff in Ploubazlanec, Brittany. Originally part of a 'Chemin de Croix' (Stations of the Cross), it is inscribed as a historic monument of France. Its poignant name, "The Widows' Cross," comes from its tragic history.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the site became a lookout where Wives and mothers of sailors would gather at this headland to watch their loved ones' schooners depart for long, six-month fishing trips in the Icelandic seas. They would sing to each other until they were out of earshot, and later return to anxiously await the boats' return, fearing their spouse or son would not come back.

Founded by Paramahansa Yogananda, the Self-Realization Fellowship center in Encinitas is a cornerstone of modern yoga in the West. Yogananda designed the original Golden Lotus Temple, dedicated in 1938. With a four-story glass tower and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Pacific, it was a marvel until cliff erosion caused its collapse just five years later in 1942.

From this dramatic history, the current spiritual complex was born. Visitors today can explore the serene, cliffside Meditation Gardens, which are open to the public. The site also includes the historic Hermitage where Yogananda lived and wrote his seminal book, Autobiography of a Yogi. The main temple for services, established at its current location in 1977, continues his teachings. It remains a global destination for spiritual renewal.

Standing guard at the strategic entrance to the city of Brest , the Petit Minou lighthouse has been safely guiding ships into the military harbor since 1848. It is one of the "paradise" lighthouses, built on the mainland coast rather than on isolated rocks. Its light, visible for 19 nautical miles, is characterized by two white flashes every six seconds. Mariners remember that the beam turns red over the dangerous Plateau des Fillettes rocks with the mnemonic, "the Minou blushes when he covers les Fillettes".

Perched at the end of a wild, rocky headland in Plouzané, it is reached via a picturesque stone bridge. The lighthouse forms a navigational alignment with the nearby Portzic lighthouse to mark the safe channel. Though automated since 1989 and closed to the public, it is a celebrated spot for its dramatic views of the Crozon peninsula and access to the famous GR®34 coastal hiking trail.
