We are praying for our friend Parker and his family in Grant's Pen, in the Parish of St Thomas on the south coast of Jamaica just a 1/2 hour drive east of Kingston. He was a fisherman for decades, now 88 yrs, and lives in a basic wood cottage just 20 yards up from this point on the gray sand beach. This calm & peaceful beach will be in the eye of hurricane Beryl as it barrels thru the western Caribbean Wednesday. Tonight I heard from his grandaughter Alisha Smith, that they, along with others nearby are hunkering down in the coastal village of Grant's Pen, Yallas.
I captured Parker here on his beach on May 5th, 2024, during a rare, visit. This was our wedding day site in 1976, and Parker & the town's kids hosted us with open hearts !

So many of our family in Kingston, and other spots on the southwest coast in the parish of Westmoreland, are prepared , as they have experience facing these huricanes.

Checking on an ' imprisoned' boy scout in the SJC holding cell, circa 1896, which Constable John Combs had constructed for the growing number of local banditos before escorting them north to the Santa Ana county jail. This commemorates a moment in Orange County, California history, and our Wild wild west. This jail cell now stands on the grounds of the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society's O'Neill museum & offices, on Los Rios st. Historical tours are conducted every Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 pm at the bottom of Vedugo st @ the tracks in dntn SJC. Come join us , have some fun & know your history!

As a southern Californian for the past 33 yrs, and an avid history and architecture student/researcher, I was the architectural tour guide this morning for 3 fabulous, attentive visiting guests, former UC Berkeley and U of Michigan students. We took a deep dive into this street, it's resident board and batten and adobe structures dating back to 1794, and local stories of the native, Acjechemen tribal people. So much learning together, as we explore descriptive design terms, discuss local legends, and share common travel experiences. Awareness of the climate crisis our planet faces while leading thru my stack of vintage vinyl, this LP cover by Count Ossie and The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari - Tales of Mozambique, stopped me. Groundbreaking in 1975, the music itself is Nyabinghi, uncommercial roots African drumming, carrying the listener to a mystical, hypnotic space. A must listen, for full comprehension of reggae's genre. The Kingston, Jamaica group formed in 1970, produced music deeply rooted in rituals & traditional African drumming, celebrating Afro-centric identity and telling the history of colonized, enslaved Mozambique.
